Random oil leak

So I dug out the gs5 today and road it since it wasn't been terribly cold out side. Had a fun time and put it back in the garage. 2 hours later I return to the garage because I left my iPod in the garage and I notice an oil leak right under my gs5. Puzzled, I started to wipe everything down with kerosene to see if i could locate the source of the leak. My first thought was it was the oil pan or oil pan gasket, but then i noticed it was more toward the front sprocket. I haven't pulled the cover off yet but does any one have a clue on what could have just abruptly started the leak?

I keep of 10w40 in my back pack now when I go riding just in case.

Old chain lube possibly? Smell it...see if it has any discernible sulfur smell. If it smells like sulfur it's oil...if it smells somewhat sweet it's probably chain lube. Also, oil will be very viscous and slick whereas chain lube will be sticky and nasty.

P/O (original owner) of my 97 never touched the chain or sprockets except to lube them. Needless to say, I was astonished at the amount of CRAP that built up inside that cover over the course of its 11k mile life. Acorns, pinestraw, rocks, hair, dust, and other miscellaneous garbage. The only reason I got concerned is I noticed it dripping out from around the gearshift. After cleaning the stuff out, it stopped dripping.

With that info I have figured out it is the chain lube that's dripping for the most part. There is another small leak that is oil but the drip is soooo little that I'm not concerned since it's "marking its territory". I will continue to have a bottle of 10w40 in my back pack.

Tanks guys
