Performed "Redneck Carb Sync Check" Today

Well, as the title implies, I performed the ghetto carb sync check procedure.

Took the cap off each plug and started the bike and compared the idle.

On the LH cylinder, I couldn't even tell the bike was running on only one cylinder. Idled at almost 1k.

On the RH cylinder, it struggled to even stay running and didn't like throttle input. Idle was around 450-500.

I assume some variation is normal but what bothers me is that it could be valves, carb sync, improper mixture settings, floats. It could be a lot of different things.

Thoughts, anyone?

You just did the hillbilly carb compare. To do the sync, you adjust the screw between the carbs so they both run the same.

If the 2 cylinders run different, it really could be anything. True carb sync checks the vacuum of the 2 carbs.

It is interesting to see if the 2 cylinders are working the same. If everything is equal, then adjusting the balance screw between the 2 carbs would balance them out.

I did this to Trey last weekend. The right side needs more choke for the 2 cylinders to be equal. Could be mixture, could be the balance screw between the carbs. Ill check the plugs. Probably I'll first try mixture out 1/4 turn then balance between the carbs.

with the hillbilly method, aren't you supposed to have the bike running, then pull the right plug wire to see how the idle drops, then reconnect the right wire and disconnect the left, noting how the idle drops.......adjust the sync screw between the carbs and try again...etc..?

I know how to sync the carbs, I was just checking the difference. Oh well. It's probably no big deal anyway.

I wasn't questioning your intelligence, I was asking for my own clarification of this syncing method since I have never synced carbs before......

this gave me the idea to try it on mine! hadn't done it yet, sooo.... i found that the left cylinder was not helping at all... it was actually running on one. keep in mind i'd never heard the engine run before i rebuilt it. now i have it redneck synced, idle screws adjusted evenly and i'm thinking i have a high float level issue because the idle won't stay stable for more than a minute or two.

My bike started doing the same thing, with the left cylinder being the "weak" one.

I chalked it up to cracking vac line plugs cause they were dry rotting, and replaced them, didnt do anything.

Didn't even think about syncing the carbs. Both idle mixture screws are 3.5 turns out.

mine is idling better, but not great. idle screws about 2.25 turns out. any further adjustment degrades idle. i just popped off the seat, unbolted tank and used an old can of brake fluid as a prop for the tank. short screw driver and some quick adjustment made the difference. now for the floats.

It's so refreshing to see a misunderstanding end well on the boards.

Without it dragging on, and on, and on....
