I was looking at getting a new battery for my bike and could not find one in any parts store. the battery in the book next to the batteries said that it should be a 10L-2B battery. all the people at the stores said that it was a special order battery and hard to get in. now i was searching on here and i found where adidasguy bought this one which is a bigger battery than standard.

Shorai Lithium 14 AH PBEq 12 Volt LiFePO4 ATV and Motorcycle Battery (- +)Shorai Lithium 14 AH PBEq 12 Volt LiFePO4 ATV and Motorcycle Battery (- +)Price: $148.00Size: 4.45 x 2.28 x 3.50 "
C.C.A.: 210 Amp/Hr: 14 PbEq
Replaces: YTZ7S, YT10L-A2, YT12CL, YTX14AHL

but the web site also has this battery

YT10L-A2 12v High Performance AGM Powersport Motorcycle BatteryYT10L-A2 12v High Performance AGM Powersport Motorcycle BatteryPrice: $54.00Size: 5 5/16 x 3 9/16 x 5 3/4 "
C.C.A.: 170 Amp/Hr: 11
Replaces: Yuasa YB10L-A2, other 10L-A2

but in the parts book at the auto parts store the second battery is for the GS 400, not for the GS 500. I dont really care what the battery is and i cant afford a $150 battery this year so i was just going to pick up a cheaper one at Napa or some other parts store but can't find it. Does anyone know what the numbers and letters mean. can i just get a little bit bigger amp battery or will i run the risk frying something?

What's the model number on the wally world battery, and is it a sealed battery?

non sealed, has caps, ES12N94B1

But it has to be installed sideways and could potentially have a loss of capacity due to the plates being out of the acid in the battery.

Mine is installed like a normal battery would be.

I've always used the 10L-A2 batteries in my GSs, more readily available and less costly than the stock 10L-B2.  They are the same except the vent hose comes off the opposite side, just ran the vent hose over to the left side of the 10L-A2 batteries.  Never had a problem.

Put a Scorpion AGM, link above, in my 02 GS in Mar 09 and replaced it with another Scorpion last Nov.  About same or better in battery life as conventional batteries for me but well worth the price.  The AGM seem to have more voltage left for spark while cranking in cold winter weather, I ride year around here in NE Ohio.  And no need to check water level all summer with the AGM sealed battery.

Thanks, looks like a good cheap alternative on a budget or in a time pinch.  It has the vent on the correct side and is slightly skinnier and shorter than the OEM size.

The Walmart battery? Did you have to modify your battery box because mine definitely will not fit.

Is this funny or a tragedy?

Spending untold time to modify a battery box in order to save a few dollars buying the wrong, cheap battery. Sheeesh!
What's even more funny is people who complain they can't ride because of a bad battery. Then they spend 2 weeks asking questions and searching to save $5. Or they buy the first, cheap, wrong battery they find then a month later post questions about electrical and starting problems and still can't jump on the bike and ride whenever they want. Then you have the ones that go everywhere except..... (and this is true!)..... a Suzuki dealer - spending days driving a car all over the place just to save $10 from the dealer price - which would be the right part GUARANTEED!

So easy to buy a GOOD and the CORRECT battery - just look up "GS500 battery". So many places have it in stock.

Threads like this should be made into a late night soap opera or a book.

I await the next chapter in the story

No hunting for me. It's just by sheer luck that everything worked properly, no mods.as mentioned above the battery I purchased is slightly smaller than stock.

gsJack

So why not just use the Walmart ES10LA2 battery?  it's the same width, length, and height as oem YB10L-A2.  Fits right in, you just need to move vent hose to left.  That ES12N94B1 is a half inch narrower and looks like the height is shorter too?

In all honesty I didn't know exactly what I was looking for. Never thought to look up model numbers to cross them. I sized it up visually, took note of post orientation and vent side and off to walmart I went lol.

I just got the 10LA2, thats waht was in it an it lasted five years, four without problems. so thats what i replaced it with. I just need it for this year, and if i have problems it will buy another one next year, the one i want is $149 and i just cant spend that much on a battery right now. the 10L B2 batteries are special order, so i just went with the A2 battery, its the just one amp less otherwise its the came batery.

Thanks for your insight considering it was these forums and the wiki that recommended the Walmart battery.
