So my bike is a 04 gs500f it had been sitting since 05 and I got it for free.
I went though the carbs, reclined the gas tank, and put a new battery in it.
Got it to start used the choke warmed up turn the choke off. During warm up it hard to keep running. Once warmed up it like to idle at 4-6000 rpm. Went through the carbs again. I notice the the LH carb didn't have a vac line on the choke piece don't know if something goes there but that's all I can think of now throttle doesn't stick and everything perfectly clean.

Doesn't really help... Nothing I find shows it

is it the left one the same as the right vacuum port circled in this pic?

If so.
and I dont know if theres a difference between my 94 and ur 04
but my stock petcocks vacc line only went to the right one.
the left one was open and never caused a problem.

the petcock went on me tho and replaced with a different one and simply capped off both ports.

does it act differently on different petcock settings?
Run, Res, or Prime?

and check ur valve clearances?

(edit)
again, dunno what the difference is with newer and older carbs.
but heres a sticky thread on older carbs that most people miss.

if the newer ones have it, scroll down the thread and make sure you have the little O ring still in there under the top caps of the carbs.

Old carbs: vacuum came off left carb. Right carb is blocked off inside.
New carbs: Vacuum line comes off of right carb. Left carb it is blocked off.
Vacuum port off of the cap is for carb syncing and is capped off.

Only thing that changes when I switch through res pri run is pri back flows fuel if kept on
I may not have the o-rings. Don't remember them. What size and type do I need if I don't and what happens if I dont have them

adidasguy

PRI - fuel should not flow all over the place. if it does, something wrong with the carbs.

h20dub

My left carb choke vac spot is not blocked.

h20dub

Well it did. Pulled them off and cleaned and now try don't leak but still like to hang revs at 4000-6000

These photos of a complete 2006 carb might help

Yes!! Finally something that showed everything in an actual picture
No what size are the o rings that I'm missing?

adidasguy

Gee - just looked at the butterflies on that set of carbs. They're from a running bike but look at the difference in them! how could those carbs have been sync'd?

IF those newer carbs even have the little O ring I pointed out.

its the smallest in the box.

someone else wanna chime in if the newer ones have that little O ring under the top caps?

(edit)
u will Not find the correct size at any hardware store like Ace, Lowes, Home Depot, etc

Tho I cant recall if I ever went to an auto parts store and asked.

be alot easier if theres a harbor freight store near ya.

Looking at the parts diagrams, I do not see the O ring under the cap in 2004+ carbs except the "Not for US Market" 2004-2006 carbs. The cap is different- has all that crap on it rather than a simple cap.

That's a good deal if all the sizes for our carbs are in that set, and they stand up to gas in the carbs.  I'll have to pick up that kit.

Good news!!!!
Adjust the throttle and but a cap over that choke vac. Got it o the road despite the ran. SOOO EXCITED!!!! :D

Karl with a K

I have a thread on here somewhere titled "New Guy".  I had problems with the engine dying everytime I came to a stop and the idle would occasionally float up to 3-4K rpm.

I cleaned the carbs, but to no avail.  By the way mine is also an 04.  I have pics in my thread and there were no rubber o rings under the carb caps.

The problem with my bike was the valve clearances were out of spec.  The exhaust vavles were too tight.  Once I adjusted the valves it ran fine.  My bike had 15,000 miles on it.

How many miles does your bike have on it?  If it is more than 5,000 I highly recommend checking the valves.  It's not difficult.  There is a great how to video on this site that will walk you through it.   By the way MR Cycles or Ron Ayers websites have exploded diagrams of the bike and you can buy any part you need.

I had good advice from a motorcycle mechanic.  He said the order of trouble shooting is mechanical (valves, compression test) first, then fire, then fuel.  People tend to jump to the carb first thing.  I suppose cause they get clogged frequently.

Anyway good luck.  I know I was initially frustrated with the bike, but now that it is running well I love it.  I've been riding it everyday to and from work and it is a joy to ride on the back roads.

Good luck.
Passion and logic have nothing to do with each other.

Well I knew it was fuel. It ran fine and fuel was going backwards. It got 6k.  Like how easy is easy. Couple wrenches and a go no go gauge?
