droped into nutral when changing 6th to 5th

i was riding to work droped back a gear to overtake it was in gear for a secon then nutral i could hear things going round in the bottom end then crash back into gear also i have to rock the bike back and forth in gear to relees the clutch after standing for a wile has anyone had this happen

Mine sometimes engages neutral in between 5 and 6.
I have no idea why but I will let you know if I find anything.

Search the term "false neutral."  Most times it is caused by not enough pressure on the shift lever when changing gears or old/incorrect oil.

False neutrals are usually caused by not enough pressure on the gear changer to Make Sure the bike is in gear before releasing the clutch - or - type of oil.

While a lot of people here rave about some of the more basic type oils (and I don't want this to start as an oil thread) the rule of thumb is generally, the cheaper the oil the harder the gear change, including a tendency for false neutrals.

Initially my bike has some cheap crud in it like Motul 1000. I used this for a couple of times and always had false neutrals. Switching to Motul 5100 fixed the problem. It also made it easier to get the bike into gear when stopped and in neutral. I then switched to Motul 300v factory line and though I had found oil nirvana. But they put the price up of that stuff so I have now using Mobile 1 and the gear changes are so smooth I hardly feel them. I can now also leave the bike in gear when cold and pull the clutch in and more the bike around - something not possible with 5100. False neutrals are a thing of the past.

The stubbornness to get into gear from neutral when stopped is common. Gently rock the bike forward or back and it will pop right in. When in gear for a while (such as pulling up in gear and leaving the bike site like this while having lunch and then coming back to it) pressure it placed on the gear making it hard to change gears. A gentle rock back or forward depending on the slope of the parking space, will see the gear pop out with ease.

These are normal behaviors for the bike.

the false neutrals i experienced were all my fault: fat footing a gear change up/down was the only cause i can remember. different WEIGHTS/VISCOSITIES can make things smoother, but the actual fault was my own.

the difficulty with 1st gear were also my fault: an overfilled crankcase -always- shows this problem. refill correctly, no problem-o, assuming the bike is warm and running.

I get False neutrals between the lower gears(2-3, 3-4) usually due to not enough pressure (in my case) I believe.

Though the back and fourth thing for the clutch after sitting happens to me ALOT.

also my gears 1-3 (most used around town) are not as smooth to shift into (roughness felt at the foot with clutch still held in), later gears are a treat.... I'm scared I might need a new gearbox or something.

Did you read anything in this thread by any chance? Let me quote...

If you are using the cheap nasty oil, then your gearbox will likely feel rough as guts. So.... what kind of oil are you using?

over filled crankcase will cause rough slow speed shifts, along with difficulty shifting into 1st while stopped. highway riding is much less noticable.

the one time i used some high dollar full synthetic (and lighter weight/viscosity) oil it felt smoother during shifts. it wasn't worth 4 times the cost at oil changes though.

also, have you adjusted your clutch cable properly ? is the cable smooth and free ?

Has anyone ever seen a Shift Star kit for the GS500 ? I always did think the shifter feel was a little on the agricultural side ~ mind you I always used Castrol GTX
