Madjak's Bike Rebuild...

Well, I finally started...tore the front end apart to see what was really damaged...

It wasn't pretty...

Bent fork, broken shift lever...these I knew about.  The front axle seems okay, but I ordered another one to be on the safe side.  The upper & lower tripples check out, no fractures or play.  So that's good news...

Bad news...

Bent rim...BOOOOOO

Since the Yamaha MT-01 isn't a very common bike, the rims are not readily available through ebay or the like...so I bit the bullet and just ordered everything through Yamaha...now my bank account is $1230 lighter...OUCH!

I will have to take a few more pics...the front fender is damaged as well, but some epoxy & paint will fix it...same with the exhaust heat shield...I'm just glad I didn't buy a BMW, my buddy had to replace his rear shock...shock is the right word for it...$2800...friggin electronically adjustable suspension...so I got off easy...kinda...

Anyway...this is what it looked like last week...

I will post an update of how it looks soon...

Good luck dude. Is there not a wheel of any other Yammy that will fit? How does aftermarket forks stack up price wise versus oem?

SAFE-T

What are you doing to fix the bent fork ?

I suspect it would take at least 6 months to a year to find good used parts for your bike. One of the unfortunate realities of owning something that was only made/sold in limited quantities.

SAFE-T

Let's just say that my aftermarket forks that are no longer available have certainly not depreciated compared to the stock ones LOL

SAFE-T

The MT-O1 was never raced (d'uh) nor customized much, nor sold in large enough quantities to attract the attention of an aftermarket fork manufacturer. Internal parts OK, but not production of a whole fork.

It may be entirely possible that parts from other Yamaha's can be substituted ~ in many cases steering head and triple clamp dimensions are similar enough that you can change entire front ends on some bikes. I wouldn't be suprised if the MT-01 shared some front end bits like forks/wheels/brake calipers/rotors with the FZ-1.

madjak30

The R1 shares the same forks, but with different spring rates internally...rim & axle are the same as well.  But I decided to just go with stock replacement, since I would have had to replace both forks if I went with R1 parts due to the spring rate.  And as for the rim, I thought about it, but then I would have miss matched rims...not cool in my view, so I ordered a new one...the shifter lever isn't shared with any other bike, but it wasn't expensive.

I'm just waiting for a call from the Yamaha dealer to let me know when the back order will be filled.  Hopefully it isn't too long.  These bikes are still being sold in Europe, so it isn't discontinued just long shipping times...gives me time to clean it all up & paint the scuffed bits  ;)

I'll post more pics when I do some more work on it.

I just read this review on your bike. Interesting what he says about the bikes handling on tight corners and roundabouts. Said the front tyre wanted to tuck under and drift wide. Is this what happened to you when you went down? You may want to go to a suspension tuning place to get the bike set up for you.

That's one of the reviews that I read prior to purchasing the bike...

But no, that wasn't the problem...the problem was the nut connecting the handle bars to the seat (aka "rider error")  :embarassed:

Well, the parts have arrived...but I forgot to get them to install new wheel bearings and a valve stem...damn...but I still have some work to do with the epoxy and paint before I can rebuild anyway...so off to the Yamaha dealer tomorrow with the new rim...I'll get it rebuilt this weekend, hopefully in time for a ride on Sunday...

I should have taken some new picks this weekend...the bent fork is removed and I have taken the heat sheilds off to scuff them and paint them...the front fender, fork guards & the plastic around the front of the tank are due for a shot of paint...along with some epoxy to repair some of the cracked bits...now that it has been crashed, it's probably not worth anything so I'll make it my worthless piece...  :embarrassed:

Yup...but not as much as I would like...the parts are here, but I haven't had enough time to work on the bike in over a week...

The broken bits have been epoxied back together, I painted a few parts...and I need to pick up a 36mm socket to loosen the steering stem nut (I think that's what you call it...nut on top of the tripples??)

Fully torn apart...cleaning and prepping started...

Some silver bits painted flat black...

Some scratches are still visible (okay, lots of scratches) but it looks much better, honest...

More silver bits painted, but blue this time...change is good me thinks...

The exhaust trim rings I decided needed to be blue...we'll see how it looks...I just wanted it to look different...the last pic is the trim ring that was in 5 pieces and was a pain in the parts to get back together...it isn't perfectly round, but a heat gun will help when the time comes to put it back on the bike...

So there is only one broken bit still on the bike...the shift lever...I have the part, but I haven't had time to work on the bike since I took these pics...friggin work is ridiculous, but I'm hoping that I can get it all back together this week or weekend and ride...I'll post more pics when the time comes...

Well, I finally made some time to continue working on my bike...

Last night I started on assembly, but couldn't get the wheel bearings to properly seat...here's a few pics...

So first thing in the morning, I ran to town to pick up some supplies...then back at it...

Then the assembly was complete...

I have one thing left to do...I have to replace the broken shift lever...  :thumb:

So...what do you think of the blue & flat black??

Shake down ride went well...but I thought there was a problem with the lower triple...but it turns out that I'm just an idiot!?!  I rode to work today with my bars out of alignment (not comfortable)...then when I got home, I loosened the forks and twisted the bars straight...I felt like such a dork, because it was such an easy fix...at least it's fixed  :icon_eek: :embarassed:

Now I can go and order the Yamaha wind deflector for the bike...maybe...I'll try it without for a while, but I think for some touring I would like the wind off my chest a bit.

Time to check out the picture game...
