No play in needle after putting in a washer in?

I just want to confirm what I'm seeing is correct.  I added an o-ring onto my carb needle (its 09 gs500f), and after putting the needle back into the slide (I think thats what its called), there is no play what so ever with the needle.  Before adding the o-ring there was a bit a play (I could push it in from the bottom a wee bit, and it would pop back out).

When reinstalling the needle back in, is it possible to push it in to deep when seating it?
