So, I'm almost finished with my projector retrofit. Here's how its comin along.

Not quite sure how to post pictures here. Especially since my internet s down. But here's some links.

Im almost done. Should be done either this Saturday, or sometime next week. Ill tke more pics of it on the bike and pics of the light output when I get there.

Thanks. I'm not worried about heat though. I did a retrofit like this on my car. But before i did the retrofit in the car, The reflective part of the assembly in my car melted due to being in the sun with the headlights on without the projectors. After that happened, I did the retrofit with the same headlights and got no meltage. Almost all of the heat is kept inside of the projector.

nice work. details on projector and shroud?

I did a e-46 (single xenon) retro with a custom shroud on my last car and have been toying with the idea of a retro on the GS.

The shroud is a gti-r shroud. It was used in a volkes wageon car from the factory. I love it. I have ocular shrouds in my car, and the gti-r is so much better imo.

I forget what the name of the projector is though. Ill check the website when my battery in my phone isn't dieing. But my projector is a full size projector. Which means I had to cut alot more to fit it. Usually when people want to retrofit a small headlight, such as the gs500f, they go with moeimoto minis. The smaller ones are easier to install. I've never delt with them but I've seen them being retrofitted with before. I just went with thils projector because I already had it.

Never go to ebay to get parts for a retrofit. Always go to theretrofitsource.com.  their customer support is amazing, and their parts aren't chinese crap.

If you're interested in doing a retrofit, you should check out their site. Lots of interesting stuff there. They also have a youtube channel with a b unch of diy stuff. Lol. I sound like a freakinm spammer.

Damn. I guess it'll have to wait untill Saturday. I tried getting the old headlight out so I could put the retrofitted one in, and didn't realize that you had to take all the fairings off to get the headlight out. Saturday it is.

Whats the wiring like on this light? Any ballast or is it just plug and play? And what type of bulb is it (hb3 or hb4 maybe)??

There is a relay harness, and there is a ballast. The projector uses d2 bulbs.

To instll the projector in the headlight assembly, you"ll need a heat gun to soften the glue around the edges, then pry it open. And you will also need a dremel tool. Those are the two main tools you'll need.

I highly suggest that you look on ebay for another headlight assembly (cheap/used) incase you mess up, (which is pretty easy to do) or stumble accross a really nice day... and your bikes headlight is in pieces, and being worked on. Lol.

When I did my retrofit in the car, it took a pretty long time. But this bikes single headlight was a cake walk. :D only took about 2 hours worth of time to get the headlight appart, aimed with the halogen bulb in, cut, measured, cut, measured, Ect. Painted, aimed with the projector, silicone the projector, install the shroud, and therow the lense back on. plus I did the bike a totally different way.

On that channel they show step by step how to do a retrofit.  But they do something that I don't agree with though.  They put the headlight in the oven to soften the glue so they could pry the assembly open.  I use a heat gun, and just get the areas on the headlight where the glue is.  If I put my Hyundai Accent's headlights in the oven, they probably would have melted.  The headlight on the GS500F doesn't seem as delicate as the ones in my car, but just to be safe, I'd never put a headlight in an oven.

The oven trick worked fine when I did mine... I don't have a heat gun, and a hair drier doesn't get hot enough.

bosch e-46 (bmw) projectors. custom shroud made from a pvc pipe reducer and a chrome trim ring from hidplanet. housings color-matched to the car, shrouds and low-beam bucket gloss black


i miss that car.

That looks really clean. Nice job on that. Your shroud doesn't even look home made. It looks like a legit shroud. Really nice looking one too.

I guess it must be just a hyundai thing then. The reflective chrome in my stock housings was just a thin film. you could just peel it off with your fingernails.  Im sure my chrome would have melted. But while working on the bikes headlight, I used some goo gone to get a small area cleaned off. (I got some paint on an area where I didn't want it.) And the goo gone didn't take the chrome off. I was so worried that it would have.

the mounting system I cooked up for them was the most ghetto-rigged thing i've ever constructed in my life. 2 self-tapping screws into the PVC, some high-strength waxed string, and a dry-wall anchor to adjust the tension

The oven is always a scary prospect. I tried to bake open a tail light once and ended up melting/warping an interior color lens. Fortunately, i had an extra set.

Any thoughts on those LED strips (like you see on audis)? an eyebrow across the "V" at the top of the light might look good.

also, what color temp bulb are you using?

Haha. Back to the retrofit source. They have everything. Lol. If you go to their site, they have an accessories area on there. They're the only place I found these. They're side emitting led strips. Not too pricy either. I have them in my car now. But they're not in the headlights that I had in when I took the picture above. Ill snap a pic tomorrow to show you what they look like.

I think if you order a xenon kit, you get a set of the led strips free if you ask.

Im running 6,000k. Completely white.

sweet. Just realized that HID planet turned their "store" into TRS. So it's the same company I dealt with before. I've got a bunch of bulbs lying around, so I can experiment with color

d2s in 4300k and 6000k, 9006 (amp connector) in 3000k and 5000k.  with my matrix, i had the most visible light with the 4300s, but thew best look with the 6000s (the e46 needed to have the shield bent in a bit in order to have any color in the cutoff, so the bluer bulbs helped). the 5000s i had looked great initially, but stared to yellow pretty quick. ran the 3000s in my fogs once i switched back to a clear lens

Glad I chose 6,000k.  I thought about 5,000k, but I decided against it. I think 6,000 is perfect.
