Help! Bike no go

Hello everyone. Thanks in advance for chiming in and sorry I couldn't find an answer with search... oh-well.

Here's the story. My 2001 gs was in storage for about 2 years and was properly winterized for storage. new oil, stabil in the fuel lines, battery out. Earlier in the summer we gave it a tune up. New oil and filter, fresh gas, new battery. It started right up and runs great! only problem is when we went to ride it, there is no go. It seems like the clutch isn't behaving even though it feels normal when I pull the clutch lever. when I have the bike on the rear stand, the wheel starts to spin slowly (even if the bike is in neutral) and if I cycle through the gears I get some resistance and the wheel will spin at greater speed. all of this is independent to the clutch lever. I don't really understand why it doesn't stall out when I have it in gear and drop the clutch!

So, I'm getting ready to crack into the lower engine but I have pretty much no idea what I'm looking for or what it could be! any ideas?

Thanks!

Dave

That seems like a tricky one. I'd start by checking cable adjustment but I doubt that's your problem, May be that when it was stored the oil had detergents or cleaners that wrecked some components in there. Does it move at all? How about when you throttle up and slowly let out on the clutch? I'm definitely no expert but I do believe this problem has been on here before. Good Luck
Friendly fire, isn't. But it's the most accurate. Semper Fi

I don't think you will need to open the engine.  Clutch adjustment, oil change (with non-energy conserving) and go from there.

I would try the oil change and clutch adjustement as staed by Paulcet 1st.  The only thing that comes to mind is that the clutch pack might be shot from sitting (partially submerged in engine oil, partially dry for 2 years). You can pull the clutch cover and have a look, be sure to note the order the plates and steels came out if you plan on reusing them, and order a new clutch cover gasket beforehand.  Just curious, what kind of oil was put in the bike pre-storage, and post storage?

Thanks for the reply's folks. I feel like the clutch cable is adjusted well but I'll start there. I removed the cover for the external shift lever and the clutch cable appears to be disengaging properly when I pull the clutch lever. I'm using what ever the recommended oil is, I've changed the oil but mabe a few more times would help? idk. seems a likely theory that the clutch plates are fused from inaction for so long only half submerged in oil? I had the recommended 3 quarts or however much in there...

sounds like I want to crack it open and inspect the clutch plates and see if they can be separated and reassembled? is that a bad idea? no way to know until you get in there...

thanks!

What kind of oil are you using? Make sure there are no "friction inhibitors" in it. Doesn't have to be specifically for bikes but you have a wet clutch so the friction inhibitors will try to keep the clutch from grabbing.

+1 on this.

That was my first thought as I read through the original post.

Did you check what oil you used? Let us know what it is and I'm sure someone can tell you if it's ok to use.

Also, did you check the cable adjustment? Do you have any free play in the clutch lever? I don't know the exact amount but I think it should have 4mm at the perch which ends up around 1/2" at the end of the lever.

Maybe it's quite literally called "the right oil?"  :dunno_black:
okay, on a serious note though, if you told us the name of the oil, maybe we could be more helpful?
