£150 project gs500

Hi Im Morgon And Im new to the forum,

A few days ago I purchased a 96 GS500 as a project bike for £150 and shes in a bit of a state, the brakes are siexzedf, she didnt run, everything needs repainting and she has a buckle in the rear wheel,

so here she is

put a fres battery on and used a temp pertol tank as it has no fuel tap and after a few goes she fire and ran like a dream, the only thing that dosent work is the tacho as someone has covered the bit where the cable attaches to the engine with some kind of metal putty

Started working on my GS today, and started to make a list of the parts that i will need to complete my build
I'm going to need
a fuel tap
rear wheel and brake disc
rear master cylinder
rear foot pegs
possible swing arm as looks a bit corroded but i will post pics tomorrow
idiot lights as they are missing, headlight bowl
and a clutch lever

the rest of the bike i can refurbish myself but this is my first project being 18 and i want it ready for when i pass my full test next year as i am currently riding a 99 gs125

i managed to get the seized piston out of the front brake by clamping down the free one and pumping the brake but not i would like to get the other piston out too so i can replace all the seals any idea how i can do this??

any help getting prts would be a great help too as i only have £300 to do this bike including painting it

£300 you say... Does this amount include the purchase price of £150? Meaning you have £150 more to put into it or £300 more to put into it?

Certainly not to discourage you, but if its £150 more including paint... That will be pretty steep with its current condition.  You could easily get it there without paint, though.  I'd rather have a solid dependable daily rider, over one that looks good on the side of the road.

A few considerations, inspirations, and thought formations for you:
Start with the engine and running problems/fixes first (fuel,air,spark). Then move to safety items (brakes, lights,etc.) Then to your preferences (comfort and looks upgrades)

There are others out there, but this is the first I thought of similar to yours, its a good read, complete, and was/IS a successful project.

How's the inside of the tank?

Fuel lines and hoses need replacement every four years - how do they look? if there is browning at the connections, its overdue.

Brake lines - If one set up is seized, consider replacement of all the brake lines with stainless steel braided.

Vavle clearances need checked

I noticed the rear end is very rusted, I know you are looking a replacement of some of those parts - also consider other parts that may be affected by this and aren't as noticeable.

How are your forks? given the rust at the rear, how do they look? clean/dry? rusted/oily? combination.

Oh yeah and.... POST PICS.  At the very minimum it will satisy people to return to your thread; however, it WILL help you because someone is bound to see things differently and/or catch something that will save you time/money/headaches... countless examples all over the forum.
