Okay, time to put you out of your misery and let me go home, gsatterw you can have the win since you guessed it was for hanging stuff from.  The picture below shows its use and that is a caricature of me, which must be fairly accurate because google photos wanted to tag it as me. :icon_eek:

Basically its an old bike spoke, bent to hook over the top of internal office walls under the suspended ceiling panels in a way that allows a picture to be invisibly hung via fishing line.  We have about 12 of these hanging various framed pictures in the office plus art work.  Just means we can move them around without having holes in the walls.  You can see it peeking out from under the ceiling in the top of the photo.

Right angle gear box - probably from a shaft drive motorcycle as there appear to be air cooling fins, though could be from an electric motor.
Spiral bevel gears means quality!
