Speaking of Capacitors... here was the static capacitor bank...

LCC = Line Commutated Converter

well i gave it the old college try. did like janx rap version also.!

I have to admit I was going to give Janx some bonus points myself  :thumb:

You were close with "power transformer" - lets say the new units use thyristors

Close enough Janx - since you had the bonus points from earlier...

It is a mercury arc valve rectifier - just decomissioned pole 1 here in Haywards and Benmore power stations.  basic gist is convert from AC to DC and transmit DC at about 275kV over a long distance and convert back again.

These puppies were replaced with some seriously large thyristor banks (3 of them at 17 tonnes suspended from the ceiling) and three huge transformers (330 tonnes each) - 1200MW capacity..

The old pole 1 had four valve halls, each valve hall contained seven ASEA type JREV/ 31 or equivalent arc valve assemblies. 4 cathodes per assembly, 2.6L of mercury per assembly. A lot of mercury... and a huge amount of maintenance..

industrial sized inverter?

oldmech

neat, use the same idea on the aircraft i work on. engines have 30 kva variable frequency ac generators and some of that power is run through TRU"s (transformer rectifier units) to make straight line 28vdc.

Kiwingenuity

Heres a blast for anyone that hasnt seen one - picked up an old Yaesu frequency counter for $20 the other day.. going to make myself a clock..

I was going to ask what a nixie tube was - but suspect a few others out there may find it too easy..

Janx101

cool cheers bro! ...

although i am all over the place on the site today i am squeezing it in between tasks on my large paperwork load (get a 'set' done and as a reward i get to do a post!) ..

anyway ... as i am flat out i had to do a real 'quick and easy' thingy .. its part of something rather than a standalone unit .. reckon it should get ident pretty quick too  :thumb:

oooooh..... hrrrmmm... ummmm.. strictly speaking .. nup...

the top part of a jack plane????????? :dunno_black:

Lever cap for a hand wood working plane?

Janx101

geeez.... tricky .. strictly speaking Kiwi is right .. cos 'Jack Plane' is http://www.record-planes.com/ this kinda dealy .. whereas the plate is actually off... http://www.diylife.com/2010/02/09/carpenters-pick-block-planes/ .. these ones almost identically ..

can you 2 come to a gentlemans agreement on this or something?? ... mind you a 'bit of biffo' would be fun too... but might get Addys thread "farmed" ..

my thing with the ruling on the ident is that yeah a lot of people call all those type of planes 'jack planes' .. but a serious woodworker (which i am not .. not really) would pick the point apart .. which i wasnt trying to do but seem to be succeeding at?! ..

I have some great photos of lightning conductor assemblies, this widget is usually protected from lightning strikes..
