Looks like bare copper stranded wire used for grounding.

Nope.
It is small - and comes in various sizes depending on where you use it.

Solder wick it is!  Comes in many different sides - tiny for IC pin holes and bigger for bigger stuff.

I don't use it that often these days - but is great for taking older equipment apart..

Just used some of these on a roading project.. and for some wierd reason I cannot get it to display the correct rotation (rotate CW 90 degress to get normal mounting orientation.

As a jpg, it is not the correct dimension to be rotated (I think a multiple of 4 pixels each way, or 8 ) so it was trimmed automatically when ThumbsPlus rotated it.

Ah, that explains it - I had cropped it a bit..

I think it is a photo detector of some kind.  "Photo eye"

Can you guess the application on a road? It is a very specific type of "photo eye" - normally 2 or 4 of these are used for a single installation...

Toll booth "eye"

not toll or ANPR related, nor is it DOAS / gas monitoring related... something very convoluted but necessary for a project we had a while back.. a tunnel project, but this device is miles away from the tunnel.

overheight truck sensor.... linked to a hugeass flashing sign that tells 'bob the truckie' to turn off onto another road before this happens ..

Good one Janx - it is a SICK optical HISIC 450 overheight sensor - frickin expensive gadgets.. we also have then integrated to existing big display signs to tell the trucks to take the next convienent exit.. we installed these here to prevent "accidents" from happening during a temporary works phase..

Our version also has barriers that close the motorway / freeway approach to the tunnel.

You're up

... oh crap .... now i gotta find a 'thing' ...

a simple enough thing.... the paper its sitting on is standard space lined foolscap (for those of you want an initial size reference) ..

but is it an easy thing or a hard thing to guess??  :flipoff:
