Bearing and bearing housing.  3rd bearing support. To allow longer spindle to take more abuse.

Well, This thread has slipped unacceptably too far down the list.. Coda hasn't been keeping score..

Found this unusual item a while back.. yes they are locks and keys, but I want to know if anyone knows what they are used for.

One clue for now - they are hideously expensive..

JAS6377

They kind of look like they'd be used as circuit breakers/switches for some kind of heavy machinery. Like in a power plant, perhaps.

And 96.5% more wub wub

Kiwingenuity

What you see behind it is gas insulated switchgear - 220kV filled with SF6.

Another clue - the keys don't operate anything directly.

Is it a something like a miners ID tag board? Something to identify when a plant worker is "in" or "out". Looks like this one is organized by crew or something.
Why are you looking here?

Maybe Lockout cabinet. When something needs to be shutdown for repair or something.

Correct - it is a bank of interlocked keys - Castell to be exact.  The idea is that the keys can only be removed in a certain order by obtaining the matching keys from the operational equipment. the keys are retained mechanically in the locks until the reverse order is done to return the equipment to service.

Very very very expensive, but pratically idiot proof - used in oil/gas and electrical systems quite a lot.
