FANTASTIC!  It's a 3-D 'Magic Eye' of a shark. This has to be one of the coolest optical illusions I have ever seen  :bowdown:

Not a typewriter tab stop, but I know exactly the piece you're talking about. Looks very similar, but completely unrelated.

Walked into my bedroom one night and this thing was on the floor a few feet in from the door. I banged my head for days trying to figure out what it was. I finally gave up and threw it in the junk drawer. The following summer when I turned the A/C on, I knew exactly what it was and where it came from.

Bingo! It's the lever to adjust the direction of the fins on the register in the ceiling.

Hmm...  All of my vents have those adjustment tabs built in, they aren't removable unless you dismantle the whole vent.

It's the  knob from the fan speed or the temp selector I would say slides from side to side or up and down?
