I had the GS500, then a CBR600 and now a GSXR750.
The bigger bike is a whole new world, great handling, uncontrollable power, ready to track!  :woohoo:

If you can get 1500 for your bad-shape bike, I would say sell it and buy a bigger bike. Most likely you will not have your money back from the mods you make.

One other thing, if you are thinking of a bigger bike, even if you won't do it this next year, you will end up getting one, that thought will not leave your mind until you get a bigger bike....I know that...  :embarrassed:

That said, today I find myself riding less than I did in me GS500..more fuel consumption, tires, back ache (long rides), etc., but I had to have the bigger bike, every time I ride there is huge adrenalin spikes, can't put it in words...  :icon_mrgreen: although for a every day ride, can't beat a GS500.

By thumper you mean 2 stroke?

Its not so much I want the crazy power,

I am 6'2 300 lbs so I am a BIIG dude, thats why I skipped the Ninja 250 as my first bike.

The GS is awesome I just wish it was physically larger, I have rode my buddies SV650 and a F4i and I love them, power is so smooth and the fuel injection means there are option for upgrading and computer tuning instead of the black art that is carbs.

I think I have come to the conclusion though that the GS has served me well and I will keep her for a couple more years at least, and dump a few more bucks into her.

ohhhhh, biiiig guy. ok. this is getting easy. pricey, but easy.

s10 is a yamaha, so it will never ever ever ever ever need any repairs. silky smooth clutch (hydraulic!), incredible transmission, Ptwin power (you will love this) but a price tag that's 6-8x what a used gs goes for :(

bmw (oh my god, i'm recommending a beemer) has a dry clutch, shaft drive, and very very very good power for back roads or interstate. i -love- this bike. helped a good buddy replace his transmission and clutch on this one. IF it fails, it's a PITA, but it's rare.

triumph tiger... oh shaZam! the power. RUSH of power. WHEELIE power. MEAN power. i have no idea what the common failures are on this machine.

i'm 6'4", and 230, but these bikes will not make you feel like a ape screwing a football. i promise.

I've found that weight makes a huge difference on the GS. Sure sounds like upgrading is a good idea!

On the bright side, browsing for bikes is fun :D.
