carb year question

I have 1997 gs500 and my carb was literally destroyed.  Whoever had it took a hammer and screwdriver to the butterfly valves and damaged them pretty bad.  I'm looking around for a carburetor and was wondering about year models. 
What year model carbs will be compatible with my bike?  (Not compatible with my carb, but what year carbs will work on my bike)
