Okay so long story short my bike hasn't run for a while. I have made many rash decisions  on trying to diagnose the problem, and may have done more harm than good (we all learn from mistakes though I guess) , however the last few weeks I have taken my time and read MANY threads on here. And boy have I learned a ton!! Thanks for everyone who has posted.

So my problem is I believe the valves are out of adjustment. This evening I decided to check the valve clearances, and have a few questions on it.

I have a set of feeler gauges which i know are to small, however with these the .006mm feeler gauge does not even fit in. I tried in the 2 inlet and the right exhaust. The largest one in the set is a .027mm and the as well does not fit. I have pictures of how I have it set up I just do not know how to post them. If someone could explain or maybe I missed a sticky which ill look, it is appriciated.

Also it is a 1996 GS500E with about 7000 miles on it. Thanks guys once i figure out pictures it will make more sense lol.

Okay I figured out pictures lol. Sorry if they are big sizing them I did not find yet.
So in this first picture it is the RT marks is that lined up correctly? Could I do something different?

This is just the inside of the case just as a reference. Ignore my messy garage lol.

Here I am trying to use one of my feeler gauges this size is .027mm which did not fit.

Here is the notches from the side are they lined up correctly?

And finally this is about how far in the feeler gauge went in in the previous picture, again just ignore the mess and my dad's bike.

Guys I honestly do appreciate any help that can be offered. Thanks again and merry christmas =))

dude... just put the bike in gear and rotate forward until the lobe of the cam is acting on the valve you are trying to measure.  if the valves are really that tight i would get a 2.40 test shim and take clearances off that.

+1. That's what I did. Works great. Not scientific just works.

Ok pictures. In the IMG tag put width=400. So:

IMG width=400 "picture" /IMG. Them when you click on the smaller pic it will show as normal size.

Well I was just going off of what the most common way that was posted about. However I will try the other way in a day or so after i can get a shim. I appreciate the advice. So basically just drop it into first, spin the wheel and when the nose of the lobe acts on it take the measurement that way? This is my first valve adjustment so i just wanna make sure I do it correctly.

Bike on center stand then....  You rotate the engine in neutral (well, in gear won't matter much, just more effort) using a 19mm wrench (I believe that is the size) on the timing rotor. Turn rotor with the wrench clockwise only!

Full instructions in the Haynes, Clymer or Suzuki manuals. I believe there are instructions on the WIKI, too as well as videos on YouTube.

To Adidasguy- do I have to line anything up as I have seen on youtube or just use his method but turn it with wrench?

Do you mean .006 inch and .027 inch? Just going from memory but valve clearances should be .03mm - .08mm which works out to @ .001 inch and .003 inch so a .006 inch feeler should not fit. A .006mm feeler would be very thin for sure.

.006 is bigger than .003... So shouldn't the .003 be skinnier and the .001 even skinnier yet?

My stocking was stuffed with some feeler gauges this year  :woohoo: Only get down to .052mm though... But it's a start!

It is best if you read the directions on valve adjustments.
You use the wrench to rotate the engine to the proper position via the timing rotor - clockwise - as that's the way the engine goes. You can go very slightly counterclockwise if you went a skooch too far.

The Video Tutorial Topic has a list of our suggested videos. Just search for "valve" and various posts will list them.

Being your first adjustment you've done, go step by step through the instructions. Don't go for short cuts. Don't take any advice of "yea, but I do it this way and it works for me...". Follow the directions so you know the correct way to do it. Then, if you try short cuts you'll know what the short cut does.

Purchase a Haynes manual. I prefer it over Clymer, but both are good. Reading and following the steps is the right way to do it.

Easiest and best way to check valve clearances is to put the engine on the timing marks and check 3 valves then turn engine 360 degrees and check the fourth one.  Remove the little cover with 3 small bolts from the right hand end of the crank to see the marks and to turn engine clockwise with a 19 mm wrench.

I went on eBay and ordered a special feeler gauge. .01-1.0 mm.  Anything smaller than .04 is like tin foil. I don't include .03 unless it is used in conjunction with another size.
