My 2001 gs500 needs a tuneup

I just bought a 2001 gs500 with only 4600 miles on it. However it has NEVER been in a shop. So it most likely has never had anything done to it other than oil changes and spark plugs. It idles rough but feels fine under power.

I have already done a carb jet cleaning and found the idle jet on one carb was clogged. I cleaned the float bowls and installed new gaskets.

I have started the process of a valve adjustment. Both intake valves need adjusted, and the left exhaust valve as well. Why would one exhaust valve ware to less than .03 clearance while the other allows .08!?

I have also replaced the fuel lines and I plan on changing all the fluids.

Is there much else that I am missing for a solid tune up?

Kind of a newbie to bikes (and the GS), but how's the chain? Cleaning it, adjusting it, checking how stretched it is... Just making sure you haven't forgotten.

lube that chain.

Tires?

How are your brake pads lookin?

Maybe take of the front spocket cover and clean all the gunk out of there (there will be gunk).

You should always sync your carbs after a valve check.

Check tires for dry rotting and tread depth.
tire pressure
check brake pads for thickness, replace if thin
brake fluid
check battery voltage for dead cells and if its low on fluid
clean carbs, check carb boots for leaks, check evac hoses for leakes, than carb sync.
check for play in stem bearings, adjust if necessary.
clean, oil, dry chain, adjust chain, rear wheel alignment.
check all bulbs
lube all cables
grease moving joints.

That shuld keep you busy for a couple hours  :thumb:

Remember to pull the plugs and check em out. If it was me I would replace them regardless.
