Recently, I swapped an engine on a 2001 model. I put in a 2004 engine in it. I cannot get to connect the tach cable. I am assuming the switched from cable driven to electric. Is there a way to connect a tach cable to the tachometer?
Also, it seems like the magneto has one less wire going to it. Is that true?

Thanks for the help!

Magneto should have 3 wires going to a 3 pin connector.
Maybe you mean the timing pickup? 2004+ ones have 1 pickup instead of 2 (89-2002). You can take the timing pickup and timing rotor off of your 2001 motor. You MUST do that or change out your entire wiring harness to a 2004 harness.
You will have to get an electronic tach. The mechanical tach can not connect to a 2004+ motor unless you swap the head.

So, I have to get a whole new speedometer/tachometer unit?  :dunno_white:
That is sad...I am cringing my dollars here to bring her back to life. haha!

You only need a tachometer. Probably many around if you post a want to buy. Probably $50 or less from someone here. I'll have to see but I might have extras.

Your Speedo is fine.

When you get the electronic tach, somewhere there are instructions on connecting it. 3 wires: +12, ground and signal from the INPUT to one of the coils.

Yes - remove the timing rotor first followed by the whole timing pickup plate from the 2001 and put them on the 2004 engine. You can then sell the rotor and pickup from the 2004 engine.

There are other parts from  the bad engine you can probably sell. If head is good - there's $100. save the clutch basket. Save the side covers if not scratched up. If stator and/or magneto good - save those. There's provably $100 for the magneto and $30-$50 for the stator.

based on what I see here: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58696.0

The timing rotor and plate is on the right hand side cover, right? So, pull out the whole thing from 2001 and put it on the new one? That makes sense, I think  :) I will let you know how far I get

Thanks!

All yu need is the tachometer.
Post here. Sure you can get one for less.
I'll check my stash of parts when I get home.
If I have a spare, I know I can beat $109. There should be others on ebay for less. shop around for a day or two.

Was anyone able to find a tachometer I could use?

adidasguy

I'm sorting parts today. I'm 90% sure I have a couple extras.

Please let me know if you find one.
