I will definitely pass! Looks like one decent gust of wind and... bye bye!

I suspect I won't be getting my paint done any time soon, typical that I take time off work and the weather forecast turns to shaZam!...

Forecast through to Thursday next week is shower or two or just plain showers, guessing my one chance to get out for a ride tomorrow is getting screwed too  :technical:

Oh well, two more weeks of holidays, hopefully the last week has decent weather although I was hoping for a break from things during that week  :dunno_black:

Well... found an issue with the front cowl while chucking all the bodywork on for a look see tonight... cracked around the top mounting hole, dunno how I didn't find this sooner but I'm glad I found it now and not after the colour and clear went on...

Do you strip primer and repair it?

Oh, shoulda said I got 3 weeks off work at the moment hence why I'm getting so much done for a change  :icon_mrgreen:

Didn't strip the primer to repair it, well not too much anyway.

I sanded underneath a whole lot and added a couple of layers of fibreglass, turns out that's actually someone else's dodgy repair already... sanding it back revealed a nice ring of body filler with a hole drilled in it with no reinforcement which is why it cracked and was moving  :technical:

I kept it in there for the hole location, but it now has reinforcement from underneath and putting pressure under there just flexes the top of the cowl as it should  :thumb:

I also got what I'm hoping is the final round of primer done... although the front cowl may yet need another round depending what sanding shows up.

I'm so over priming and sanding... but I have at least one more round to do after finding many little pin pricks in the front cowl again.

I reckon the issue is that I never sealed the bare fibreglass properly after the repairs and sanding back the original gelcoat, so I keep hitting little air pockets. I reckon they're too deep for the high build primer to fill and too fine for the body filler to get into properly, so I'm giving some blade putty a shot this time, and then more primer tomorrow.

At least the other bits are good for colour at last...

It certainly feels that way!!

I'll be back at it shortly... hopefully that putty got good coverage and this will be the last round... otherwise  :technical: do it again...

This guy's amazing...

I can barely muster enough motivation to get off my ass and lube the chain once a month and peteGS is working 7 days a week creating a masterpiece. :dunno_black:

Cheers guys and gal!! Dunno about a masterpiece... but I'll be stoked if it turns out shiny, neat, and tidy  :thumb:

That's somewhat of a large boat Yama... take it for a cruise?

Hopefully last round of primer done today... a bit ugly though as I laid it on real thick and got some runs happening. Oh well, better too much than not enough primer this time round I reckon!

Given I had to mix more primer than I needed I got the front fork brace primed and painted as well as I conveniently happened to degrease it the other day. It's just got aerosol satin black acrylic on it as it's not seen but I want it neat and protected from rusting.

I really hope the weather cooperates tomorrow, I wanna get some colour painted!

what a major pain on your $ yama :icon_razz:

pete are you going to clear it?  What are your plans?  I'm looking at 2k but I've read so much about isocyanates and a bit concerned about using it,....

Cool yama, gotta see the big boat in full!

Yep CBR,  it'll all be getting cleared as well. I don't know if I'll get the black done today or not, currently rather wet outside, although if the rain radar is to be believed there's a chance it will clear up a bit later on this morning, see how it goes.

I get your concern with the 2K paint, and that's why I've laid my shed out like I have. It's certainly not a professional spray booth by any means but I'm comfortable I'm not causing anyone harm with the small amount of spraying I'm doing. The isocyanates are only bad when air borne during spraying, so that's the time to deal with them.

I have the shed 100% insulated (ceiling and walls) for noise but it also means I've had to seal all that in properly. The compressor lives in a box (also for noise) but it means it's sealed away from the fumes. On top of the compressor box I built the recirculation box with a filter in front of a fan, then an activated charcoal filter on the exit. The fan is driven by belt by an old washing machine motor so the motor is also sealed away from the fumes.

I have tarps and plastic that I put snap locks and velcro on so I can clip them to the walls which seems to give a good seal around the door and the removable part of the wall and roof (the bits I add in to expand the shed a bit).

So far after spraying when I walk outside, there's really only the slightest hint of thinners, and from what my house mate said that's typically only smelt after I actually open the door. There's no smell while it's sealed up.

Of course the isocyanates don't smell, but if you can't smell the thinners then there's not much chance of the bad stuff being outside either...

For my personal protection while spraying I wear disposable overalls (cheap as dirt on eBay) which also have a hood, old boots, gloves, a proper 3M 6000 series half face respirator with organic vapor cartridges (ok to use with isocyanates as long as you replace the filters regularly), and goggles.

The 3M respirator is awesome and was only about $40 from memory which is well worth it. I'll need to replace the filters after this round of painting I think but they can be had around the $30 mark so well worth it in my opinion.

They recommend a forced air setup for spraying isocyanates but that is unaffordable for me.
