EJ, dammit are you still chiming in from Jersey about wrenching?
Holy valve-tap... It's "Hit & Run Jester"  :woohoo:

Thanks for swinging by the Tard Farm to let us know your still alive!

This may seem like an odd thought but time is flying by: How old is you Son now-a-days?
Are you still wandering the banks of the Ohio River?

Good to see you post!

Oh yeah!!! Another five cleaned up last night, four to go... and did some more measuring and so far the crank is looking good  :thumb:

I have a feeling third gear in the transmission is a bit loose but I need to measure the backlash to be certain.

DDP FTW!!!

Last four valves cleaned up... transmission has some issues  :technical:

Third gear backlash is out of spec by 0.002" as are all three shift forks by 0.001". Not sure if that's critical or not but I suspect the teeth on third and fourth gears are... this is third drive gear, fourth is just starting.

If I replace all that it's roughly $650 brand new  :technical:

Those 2 teeth to left of centre image. . Looks like hard face is worn off?

Electrojake

If the bike is going to be just used for occasional local rides you'd do best to NOT get too involved in that trany.
With a high mileage unit changing one of anything will inevitably force you to change everything to get it to shift properly again.

Besides,,, Can you even get parts, bearing, gears, shafts, etc.. for that thing?  :dunno_black:

However, If money is no object, you certainly have the skill to rebuild that thing to good-as-new condition. <beer helps>
I say; "go for it!"

Possible 40deg Celsius here at work today...  if the heat gets to me I may end up doing a nudie run to the nearest creek! ... was a humid 34 yesterday and gave me the grumpies!

Janx101

That's 104 in the archaic measure! Lol

peteGS

Yep, facing going/gone on both 3rd and 4th drive gears... parts are easy to get but not cheap... the awkward decision is new gears or second hand gears? If I do new for those two pairs... then I should do the others as well... that's not cheap... so maybe just two good second hand pairs instead... aaargh decisions, decisions!!!

You mean you not going to reface, resurface and temper them yourself!? .... what sort of Queensland bush mechanic are you!?! Lmao ;)

Electrojake

Yeah Janx... He's "pussing out"

Hell... If he was a real man he'd forge his own in a home-made blast-furnace.  :whisper:

Bloody oath!! .. 44 gallon drum with a hatch cut into it should do! .... mind the edges though!

peteGS

Errr... yeah... sure... hahaha

Turns out I measured wrong, used the dial gauge the wrong way... measured properly and they're all out of spec  :technical:

Or he might have to supersize it, going for a 55gal.
