Does anyone know if a 2002 SV650S rear shock fits a 2005 GS500f?

It seems like the rear shock on my new project bounces like a basketball.  Someone on Craigs List has a shock off of a 2002 SV650S with 2000 miles on it for $30.  I was wondering if it would work and any modifications would be necessary.  Thanks.

Bouncing like a basket ball? Maybe that shock is busted? GS500 rear shocks don't do that as far as I can tell. Maybe with 250 pound rider? They are somewhat stiff except for BIG bumps, then I still have preload set to middle position.

They bounce like a basketball after the oil all leaks out of them, I had a leaker.  My 02 GS shock was gone by 6-7k miles and I just finished putting on a third one.  That second one was not a leaker but was just worn out and bottoming frequently while set on 7 at 97k miles.

Back to the original question, did you check the Wiki there is info on shock upgrades there.  They call them upgrades but I prefer the oem GS shock myself.

2002 SV650 shocks are 337mm long. GS500 is about 290mm. It will raise your rear close to 50mm (2") unless you drill new holes. The SV650 shock is not much an upgrade from the GS considering it is only preload adjustable just like the GS one.

Katana 600 shock.  I bought one for $20 at the swap meet.  Was great until I lost 37 lbs.  Now STIFF.
