Well i official mistreated my truck last night and paid for it. I was moving a gooseneck trailer loaded down with building lumber for a friend, when i was backing it into his barn to keep it out of the weather i heard a loud pop/grind sound. I had hoped i twisted the drive shaft, but nope have a dent in the tranny pan (from the inside) so I'm sure that's not good (clearly). I had to back up a hill to get into the barn with it.  Anyhow just had it towed to the tranny shop 20 mins ago to find out what it's going to cost me.. I'm sure it will make my mad when i get the price to fix it.. No it was not a 4x4, 2wd dually. Oh I wont even get started on the tow bill :bs:

The moral of this story= don't push you truck to the limit even if you think its a bull.. which mine is, its just sick now  ..

Is your truck a Ford by any chance?

A Dually will pull anything with wheels, any make, they are all built to haul forward or reverse.

Should have been, It was a 28ft tandem trailer fully loaded. It was suppose to be in 2 separate loads but they loaded it all on it.

Its a dodge, yes they don't have to best rep on tranny's but first time i had one fail (204k miles). The shop did not get to it today so I still don't know the damage or cost yet.

whats your truck rated for?, i know that trailer is heavy by itself. and 204k its trans will be slightly tired. i had back in the day an isuzu npr ( 5.0 diesel)  i got rid of it @ 510 k but had started reducing what i carried on her. because i know its trans was the original. never maxed it out tho to capacity.

I think its GCWR 17,000 or 18,000 as I'm almost positive it don't have the 4.10 gears. Have to double check that, most of the miles on this truck is highway with out loads. I'm not sure what the weight on trailer was, but I think when it started pushing the truck and i was stupid and give it more pedal to the floor is what did the tranny in. Like i said its all my fault for being stupid and wanting to get it done and get home.

ahhh trying to go backwards, whilst being pushed fwds. been there. i DID get away with it luckily. future referance, if this happens, use brake to cease or significantly slow down fwd rolling. was she a diesel or petrol/gas? that gvwr seems near diesel territory

They do make duallys in gas engines although I never understood why. I would never have one.

Its diesel, i did use breaks to slow the slide(however its gravel so they help little once traction is lost) then floored it in reverse if not it was pushing me down to a drop off ditch. The tranny did not go out right then but my thinking is it damaged something and once i got it almost in the barn  and let off pedal it finished it off. I guess once no more pressure was on tranny whatever broke in there came apart. However I'm not a tranny guy so not sure. Hopefully i know Monday.

Lot of farmers etc use gas dually since they are cheaper to buy/maintain and don't have to worry about in winter.

Seems to me tree stumps are irrelevant and you're the one that brought that up, I was merely commenting on your spam.

Edit: Maybe i was a bit harsh and vented on you a bit. I apologize, some times when so much is on your mind you don't think be for saying something. Anyhow moving on with the topic.

When you said truck and tranny the first thing that popped into my head was Dodge. Of the 3 drive trains I've see self destruct all 3 have been Dodge...including my own. I saw 2 drop a driveshaft wile moving in the last year.
Why are you looking here?

wayne cmon now. give it a rest. dont tard this thread. perhaps you disagreed with his reply, perhaps he disagreed with yours. either way, neither one was spam. spam is a reply totally unrelated to the topic. the reply, whether correct or not, if related is not spam. plus hes not selling anythign or posting links to threads or sites. the downside to duallies is if the centre of the tires load up with mud or gravel or debris, become all but useless. sure if its geared right, it will NEARLY pull anything. i had an f350 that if done right could pull a school bus. yes id be exceeding its weight limits. to the OP, my friend, w/o coming across as being harsh, best i can say is sometimes shaZam! happens. it is quite possible you blew out the valve body. MIGHT be salvageable. a used trans. will suffice. Now, if this truck will be doing some heavy work, take that into acct.
Aaron
p.s. wayne my friend. not meaning to jump you or anyone else. id like to see this resolved. w/o it getting tarded like alot of these threads ive seen over nearly a decade here. i know you had  ( for lack of a better term, a shitty day) have you considered regearing the rear end/ nother question i forgot to ask. Did the trailer have brakes?

Yeah, they have a bad rep with trannys. However this is my 3rd dodge and first tranny problem. I would buy a ford, but highly dislike the're box shape.

yamahonkawazuki I personally wasn't made, i just typed exactly what i thought and i have edited it, what's done is done so moving on.. Yes the trailer had brakes, but like i said lost traction on gravel. truck broke lose then trailer brakes slowed it but was sliding aswell. It was not enough as it was picking up speed until i floored it in reverse which dug down to more packed gravel and regained traction stopping the slide. The actual failure happened after that, maybe it was already damaged be for this and that just broke the back I don't know. As for re-gearing probably not, i don't pull heavy loads to warrant a gear change. I only moved this trailer as a favor to a buddy who had to take his wife to the hospital (its a private matter i wont go into). So he called and asked if i could pick it up and put it in his barn be for it started raining/snowing. He as offered to pay for repair which i turned down, its my truck and my responsibility. he as more pressing concerns to deal with then worrying about my tranny.
