Oh my where to start.this is my second post on this bike as im completely stuck and really need help.bike now starts perfectly and on both cylinders but  dose not want to rev past 2000revs ish and if it dose and i pull away on the bike it bogs and surges and then won't rev past idle without stalling and opening choke makes the revs rise to about 4000rpm but opening the throttle makes no difference!.I've changed the pickup coils, plug leads and tested the resistance on the ignition coils ,new spark plugs and battery checked the charging system.and cleaned carbs!. Please help it doing my head in.i just wanna ride again.Thanks.

Gunky jets and or needles? .... Saying that I don't know how to fix ... Just that they might be all full or covered in crud?

... Sticky throttle cable.... Loose/cracked carb boots ... Tank petcock not open properly ... Micro moisture in plug lead-heads ... Cruddy/old fuel ... Mixture all cocked up .... Not enough fuel in tank (reserve level is usually about 5 litres/1.3 gallons) and sounds like 'there is plenty' , but there isn't so try reserve? .... Ummmm ... There's probably more fueling related stuff but that's what I can think of now....

Electrical ... Apart from the plug leads I dunno.... Could be the stator thingy or the bit where the magnets/epoxy (unless that's the same bit) ... Have moisture or looseness.... But mostly for car electrics when a thing will idle but bogs and or dies on throttle opening , then I usually suspect moisture in the distributor cap .... So the bike version of that bit!!

Thanks ,so far I've checked fuel flow, put new plugs caps and leads, cleaned carbs checked battery and charging system and coils and am back at square one.

Just read all your posts and you've already checked almost everything except there is no mention of the air cleaner, any chance you have a very dirty air cleaner or perhaps some critter moved in there and set up housekeeping while you were away for 10 days?  Your problems started after that.

When I clicked on your profile I saw "the uk-its soooo cold here."  A couple winters ago my 02 wouldn't start one morning, I always start on full choke in cold weather.  It became flooded so I cranked it over some with the choke closed and throttle wide open to clear it and then tried to start without choke, it started to run but would not keep running without the choke being opened.  Very dirty air cleaner caused high vacuum in carb while cranking and too much gas was sucked thru the choke circuits flooding it.  I put in a new air cleaner element and all was good again.

You mentioned your bike always ran rich and you always started without choke, that when you got it running it wouldn't take the throttle past 2k revs but opening the choke then revved it to 4k rpm.  Also when you blew into carb vents it revved up.  Sounds like maybe a very dirty air cleaner.

... as always Jack ... you come up with some 'gold nuggets'  :thumb: ... and when i saw your mention of air cleaner... went D'oh! ..  ;)

dp441000 .. the inner surface bit of the air cleaner is the 'dirty side' as i understand it .. as a 'just in case you unaware of it' mention...

Rip in the diaphragm ?

You seem to have the classic signs ... except its a big rip in your case ... Tiny rip would caus eyou to make 6k @ idle, 5k in first, 4.5k in 2nd, 4k in 3rd, 3.5k in 4th etc etc

You may have both diaphragms ripped big ... or how did you not spot it ... you installed them so the spring isn't crooked so it can lift ?

Cool.

Hi thanks for the reply,I have checked the diaphragms and they looked ok,a bit wrinkled but found no holes or tears ect.could it be an air passage that's still blocked?.i have also checked the air filter which is nearly new . When you watch the slides with air box off you can see the slides shaking up and down but not lifting properly.

Errr.... Now it might just be me.... But the info on the slides shaking ... And not lifting properly.... Could be.... The most significant piece of info yet ....

I dunnom cos I haven't ever watched the things on my bike....  But ...  Reasonable certain they sposed to lift properly .... And not shake?!

dp441000

Quick update on my bike...she still won't rev past idlq unless I blow gently down carb air vent ..on removing air cleaner I could see when I blew down vent I was pushing the fuel up out into the carb and feeding fuel in.i tryed moving  slides and butterfly valve be hand and the engine did not rev......so why is it not taking  the fuel?........eeek:-)

I'm so glad I knew that last was about a motorbike! ... Taken out of context it could be decidedly risqué!  :icon_rolleyes: :D
