I'm not acting smart buddy I'm asking for advice I do a lot of motorway miles which uses oil a lot more than small town commuting I haven't had the bike long either I'm used to 2 stroke 125s that's where my knowlage is 4 strokes are a new thing to me, everybody has a different learning curve which I think you should respect rather than taking the piss out off

codajastal

As I said before the tachometer may be different than yours for the newer one as they went electronic so you would possibly need to change that at the same time

Cods, I am fun.  Funny looking that is...

**climbing back into my box**

The GS500 is like a simple 4-stroke lawn mower.  Check oil often, and change no less than once a season.  You'll be A-OK if you do that.  My lawn mower on the other hand, you add oil to the gas.  Don't do that in our GS.  It will run like crap.

Milk in the handlebars on the other hand...
Bikeless and Broke at the moment...

Eh Cods.... This Jester here.... He starting to sound almost .... Strine!! ... Hmmm...

Its in his profile which is the first place I looked so that I would not give him the wrong information for his country.
I thought everyone did this?
Like I said in my country you can still buy the E model new here.
All is forgiven anyway move on.

I'm with you, for the record. This is an international message board and it's fair to assume that other posters are not from the same country as yourself.

And there is no oil cooler on old naked GS or new naked GS. Only the faired model.

Have a look here for a break down of changes over the years:

And the bottom end on the F bikes with coolers is different for the oil flow than that of the E w/o the cooler

ride til she blows and then replace the motor.  Could be tomorrow could be 40k miles down the road.

This is terrible advise. When my motor went, the resulting crash took my arm out of the socket. I could have bought 2 engines for the price of my deductibles.

How low was the oil? And how are you checking your level?

PROPER WAY TO CHECK THE OIL. (thanks to ben2go)

Place bike on center stand on level ground.
Warm engine.
Wait 5 minutes.
Remove dip stick and wipe clean with a lint free cloth.
Set the dip stick in the hole.DO NOT SCREW THE DIP STICK IN!!!
Remove the dip stick for an accurate oil level check.

Some people will say it shouldn't be done on the centre stand but I see no difference on or off in my experience.

Joehanson70

Yeah I was doing it like your explaining and it wasn't even touching the bottom off the dip stick

Is the noise constant and loud?

Joehanson70

No only around 4000 rpm any higher it goes away and any lower it goes away

codajastal

vibration noise? cam chain noise?

look for a loose bolt/screw/something. vibrations/resonance at a particular rpm is usually a body piece or loose fastener.

also, you're aware the gs will make a tapping sound at idle, from the upper left because of cam float, right ?

just making certain.

the two people making jackasses of themselves need to do it via pm. the main forum is for concrete information, not mud slinging or panty pulling.

Well if you bothered to read the thread properly you would have seen I was trying to inform the person of the correct information.
Also your comment is neither necessary nor helpful now is it?

Zwerski

So after all of the above, OP, have you come any closer to getting this problem solved?

Joehanson70

No haven't bothered I need to get it done really as it has an occasional illness and runs bad, and the tapping noise gets a little worse, so its not getting any better I don't know whether to find another engine or repair this one
