GS500F stalls out while riding

I was riding my GS yesterday and I got about 2 miles from my house and it suddenly had a big loss of power and was bogging down.  About 100 yards later the engine stalled.  I started to check things like make sure I turned the fuel petcock on and made sure there was gas in the tank.  Everything looked O.K. so I started the bike back up and it ran fine for about another half a mile and it died again.  this time it wouldn't restart.  I had to leave the bike, walk home, get the truck and bring the bike back home.  The next morning I tried to start it again.  It fired right up and I let it warm up in the driveway.  When I took it for a spin it didn't even make it to the end of the block before The engine quit again and I had to push it back home.  Any ideas?

gas cap vent plugged, or pinched?

What have you done to the bike, how long have you had it?

Bump. I'm having the same problem with my bike. Does anyone have a solution?

I have put a slip on exhaust and air filter on the bike and jetted accordingly.  How do I check the vent on the gas cap?

It has been several months since the exhaust/filter/jets and it was running great that whole time.

Did you happen to turn off the under-tank petcock as part of this process?

I ran the bike with the petcock on prime and it ran great.   What is wrong with it that it will only run on prime?

Maybe a problem with the vacuum system? ON and RES are vacuum actuated; they close the petcock when the bike is off. PRI lets fuel flow regardless of vacuum so that you can prime the carbs after everything's been drained.
When in doubt, empty the magazine.

Did you ever separate the two carbs?

THe left carb has a vent tube coming out the top right and it goes to the back of the petcock.. its a vacuum hose. Maybe it slopped off, got pinched, cracked, etc.

If it ran fine for months then its prob just not getting fuel due to some vacuum prob, somethings pinched, etc. The frame petcock/tank petcock may need to be checked. I got rid of my frame petcock all together to rid myself of fuel issues like this with a t connector going straight from the tank to the carbs.

i would also check the main jets if your shutting down while on the road. You never know if something just magically appears in the float bowls and cloggs up the jets. Just happened to me this morning and i found the culprit in my left carb. Same symptoms that you are having btw and i got her running

The hose at the bottom of the airbox was disconnected.  It appears to just be a drain hose but could this be my problem?

it could cause unfiltered air to go into the intake, which could be bad. i would reconnect or block the line if possible. I dont think that would cause it to stall out though. I would check the fuel lines, carburetor, and vacuum lines for any abnormalities, cause it sounds like it could be fuel starvation. Can you post a link to a video of your bike and how its sounding when it stalls out?

Could also be the voltage regulator gone bad if you checked everything on the carbs. Battery will have some juice to start but then will die from not being charged while running. Bike just running on battery power = no good. Except this sounds more like a fuel issue, just throwing it out there.

Drain hose on the sir box has a one-way cap on the end. You should replace it with the correct thing.

Fuel starvation can be due to a dirty petcock. Jacob told us at the West Seattle Bike Cave that he had fuel problems. Then he opened up the frame petcock and cleaned out a lot of gunk and crap. After that, the frame petcock was good as new.

Interesting that people just don;t think of cleaning out that thing. I've also opened up a few and found them full of crap. Gas sitting in there will form sludge - just like anywhere else. Just as fuel lines and carbs need occasional cleaning, so does the frame petcock.
