Dear friends. I love riding off road on my gs500. Some of the pics of my ride are as below

Due to such trips I have severely damaged the exhaust pipes which go under the engine. As a result they smoke when bike starts due to lots of dirt on them. I wanted to get ideas to move the exhaust pipes from under the engine and put them on the side. Like they are in the bike shown below.

In the pic above (of honda cg125), the exhaust pipe do not go under the engine but rather on the side. This will also help increase the ground clearance of the bike. The pic is just there to show you guys the idea I have in mind. I am thinking that for this kind of set-up, i would need to cut the pipes which go under the engine and weld new ones which will go from the side. The position of the exhaust will remain the same so i wont need to make new fittings. Just the pipe would be changed.

I look forward to your ides and suggestions on this.

A few things to consider here. routing the headers ( manifolds) from under the engine requires a custom fabricator. OR using shields say shields from a strictly off road bike. id consider dual sport tires too. ( cause eventually will hit mud if youve not already.)

Using shields would further decrease groung clearence. I was thinking to cut the exhaust and make it 2 into 1 around the head itself. That way i will have just a single pipe to worry about. So far i was thinking of routing the pipe under the foot rest and brake pedal.
Do you think there would be an issue if remove the pipe which connects the two exhaust pipes near the head? What is the exact purpose of this pipe?

And yes, i do plan to get dual purpose tyres. However, there are not many options available in 110/70 and 130/70 :(

Looks like you have a lot of fun on your bike  :thumb:
I think it's a great idea.
Leave the heads separate for as long as possible before going 2-1 to hopefully keep as much torque as you can.
The cross tube helps balance out the engine if the carbs aren't synched 100%, or 1cylinder has a little better compression then the other, etc.  I would keep it.

Be aware, this is not very wise advise!

interesting project idea! ..  :thumb:

... an additional idea also ... when you succeed in re-routing your pipes ... a nice aluminium or steel bash plate mounted flat under the frame where the pipe went away from all the way across the two ... maybe 5mm aluminium or 3 mm steel ... bolted in so you can remove it for maintenance if you have to at all. ... at the moment the pipe is taking the main blunt force trauma of any rocks or other things you hit ... it would be really good to not have all those hits happening on the bottom of your gearbox and engine instead! ....  :thumb:
