Quirky gears

Hello All,
Sometimes when riding, the bike shifts itself from fifth gear back to fourth.  I've experienced the false neutral issue going from first to second, but I was wondering if the 5th to 4th is an indication of a budding transmission problem.  I do regular oil changes with the correct stuff and my '96 only has 7.5 K on the clock.  Ideas?

Shift itself? I assume you are not getting it in gear all the way and it is popping out

i experience the same problem, i agree with weedahoe, probably just not shifting into gear hard enough. im not sure whether the brand of oil used may effect it. best of luck!

I have the same issue from time to time. I try to shift easy because I'm afraid it'll tear the transmission up but from what I've been told that's pretty tough to do. So I guess you need to shift with intent and ride on.

not accidentally leaving your boot toecap on the shifter lever and maybe a bumpy bit of road? ... with certain amounts of rpm the whole system can be tapped into another gear with not much pressure at all! ... that point when you are not quite ON the throttle but not actively OFF throttle and slowing.... it all gets a bit floaty! ... my size US14 boot toes snag the lever sometimes.. usually resulting in a false neutral ..

it is possible with care though to deliberately clutchless shift .. pretty much right through the gearbox .. up and down... maybe my clutch is on the verge of needing adjustment.... maybe yours also eh!
