Problems with my 07 GS500F

I bought my first ever bike about a month ago on craigslist. It is an 07 GS500f with about 11.7K miles on it. Everything seemed to check out from the mechanic and it rode great. It was leaking gas out of the air filter and since I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, me and a buddy who is a mechanic took out the carbs and cleaned them because we figured from what we read that it was a stuck float or needle. Everything seemed fine once we got it all running. It ran like a champ for about a week. All of a sudden about a week later it happened again. When I tried to start it, I could hear it trying but it never did then gas started leaking out of the breather hose at the bottom of the air filter. Luckily I was able to get it home from the college and tapped on the bowls of the carbs the next day and it started right up no problem. No leaking. It seems to only do it when it has trouble starting. So now, when I try to ride it when I'm on the throttle it like surges. I will have the throttle at lets say 5k rpm and all of a sudden the power will just quit and ill drop in rpm and then if it doesn't die which sometimes it does if I'm at low speeds/rpm the power will return real hard. I'm at a loss of what's going on. Any help would be much appreciated. I don't really have the money to go to a mechanic to have them look at it because I'm quite broke. Thanks

Stuck or sticking float ... Shake the bugger side to side on center stand ... that could get it to close up and be OK.
Cool.

Okay cool I will try that for sure. I noticed to day when I was going to take it back out. While it was idling there would be a small pop and the rpm might drop 100 or so rpm not a lot and it did it a few times so I looked and when it did it the carb bowl and the carbs themselves shook. Also idk if this is important but when stopping my bike stays at about 3k rpm then after I play with the friction zone a bit the rpms finally come down to normal.

That = lean ...
Overflowing floats will momentarily make it so rich it will not run ... you fix that issue by shaking it, it will go right back to being leaner than Lindsay Lohan.

Okay thanks for you're help! Much appreciated. I noticed since this is my first bike I don't really let the bike warm up could that be contributed to the bike losing power then it coming back?

One thing that I knowtised is that with my Honda is if you have it on the side stand one of the carb floats would leak alittle because of the angle its resting.  When stored fully upright both floats would seat properly and I would never have a issue.  Just a thought.
