Hey all, going to start to cafe/brat style a 1996 GS500 this winter and wondering what the best way to achieve a bare tank look would be?

I'd rather have a clear coat over the tank rather than just keep oiling it every day.

Has anyone tackled such a project before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Strip it, polish it and hurry up and clear. Its going to start oxidizing instantly whether you see it or not

Do I need any special type of clear? Would clear from a rattle can work?

I personally hate rattle can clears. But if you don't have a quality paint gun or want to pay a shop to do it, that's all you're stuck with

agreed. rattle can clears or paints even can be problematic. 2 coats with sanding id recommend. although idk how shiny you want tANK TO be. course sanding could dull it down if you want more matte versus gloss

I am into buying bikes that people have given up on and fixing them up!

RIP Patrick Lajko, I miss you man.

I've seen people try to keep a bare metal tank from rusting, and nothing I've seen works in the long run.

If you change your mind though, look at Duplicolor Metalcast paints. They can be sprayed onto bare steel with no primer, and allow the "grain" of the metal underneath to shine thru. I've used the red and orange types but they make a smoke paint as well. Of course, it will still need a coat of gas resistant clear coat on top (like Spraymax 2K Clear).

this is an option. i was considering making a clear frame for the pig. but ended up choosing the maserati charcoal grey. ( when its done.) but a clear frame/tank is enticing lol

Hi,
Take a look at the POR15 site. They make a clear coat that is able to be sprayed or brushed and is non yellowing!
They also have a product to thoroughly clean the metal and seal it against corrosion...not sure of that it clear, though.

Good luck and throw up pictures!!
