Why I Do Most of My Own Work

I sleep in the basement at my parents' house, as I'm still in college, and I'm a cheap bastage. I noticed last night that there was a puddle forming under our A/C unit, so I called dad down to take a look. He called "the guy" this morning, and he came out to take a look at it. The condensate pump gave up the ghost after  16 years of faithful service. Shouldn't be too expensive, right? Well, "the guy" wanted $510 to put in a new pump. Which was promptly followed by an exclamatory expletive. We told him to shove off, politely, and did it ourselves.

The final cost of the fix:
$47 for a new pump
$20 for 50' of 3/8" ID exhaust line
One hour of labor by amateurs
Grand total of around $70.

I mean absolutely no offense at all to anyone who does this kind of work. I understand that there are overhead charges that must be covered, but I just don't get how a $70 fix turns into $500??

Are you kidding A/C repair people are the biggest thieves ever.  I saw a guy try to charge $800 for a $12 capacitor.

Some professions seem to attract unsavory individuals.  A/C repair is one of them.

Better yet ... the R22 refrigerant ... I subbed that other one that is in a white cylinder (forget the name) ... and it worked perfectly ... leak still there but I have not had to do more than add a few lb of the thing a year. That guy is cheap ... not the bloated R22 crap ...

for sure cuz! .. like in my R34 i use avgas right .. which gives me hectic boost off the line .. beats omar's crap falcon everytime bro!!... but the damn cops reckon that i need to get my licence back before i go on the road again or they will lock me away! ... that is so crap! .. im a awesome driver mate! .. i can do better heli's than georgie even!! like im not even kidding you bro!

Yea 22 you need a licence to buy ... I got something else ,1 sec - R22a - yea I know all refrigerants with a is crap ... except, I stuffed the ac system that leaks in my house with this, not only did it mix and work great with the R22 in there, it also has slowed down the leak by 1/2 ... I have sealant too, not used it yet cos I dont have car to house adapter.
