Stripped My Clutch Perch...

Yeah... I was lubing my clutch cable about 30 minutes ago. When I went to re-tighten the clutch perch to the handlebars, I ended up stripping the threads in the perch. Oops. So, now I'm on the hunt for a replacement. I'm thinking about just getting a GSXR or SV perch, but I'd prefer to have matching levers. Also, my clutch safety switch is completely bypassed due to a wreck last year, so I'm not worried about switch compatibility.

So, questions:
1. What year(s) GSXR600/SV650 perches will work?
2. Are GSXR600/SV650 brake levers compatible with the GS?

Thanks in advance for the impending links and "There's a search button" replies!

You all have my sincerest apologies, but I'd prefer to take the flak for creating a new thread than jack someone else's (GS500F2004).

Hahaha, I'll be watching this thread closely, looks like we're after the same information!

Judging by what I have learnt so far, we need to stick to the early SV650's. I've been seeing '99 - '02 SV650 perches as being the best bet thus far, not 100% on that though.

You also need to consider a clutch cable replacement it seems, the post here by Custom Blue seems to say that even a 90 degree SV650 clutch cable won't work  :o :o ?

And I'm keeping a close eye on yours as well lol.

I've also read that the stock clutch cable won't work. With my bar setup, though, I think my cable should clear the gauges. As noted in my signature, I've got clubman bars with 2" risers. They moved the clutch perch down and forward, so I should have room to spare. If anything, I may need a shorter cable.

GS is a  one off. Nothing else has a mirror mount.
Old school GS550's have mirror mounts, but the crazy angle the cable comes out in on the GS is also a one off.

Some people may have stuffed an SV one anyway and said screw the mirror ... or the naked sv has mirror mount ...

Cool.

I have an F model, so mirror mounts are immaterial. That's good to know, though. My GF may (or may not) be picking up a GS in the next few years.

If the guage cluster was in the fairing like the katana has, the katana one would be a direct fit ... The clutch is sorta splayed out cos the gauge cluster will get in your way if the katana perch was used.

Alright, so it looks to me like the GSXR bars are also 7/8", so that clutch perch should work. I'll play with the cable and make it work somehow.

So, that leaves my second question: will a GSXR brake lever fit the GS, or should I grab a GSXR brake perch, too?

I think the brake lever on those old school GSXR's is the same as the GS.
Nearly all jap bikes have 7/8th bars, that isn't the biggest concern. Try that GSXR clutch and you'll know what a PITA the GS clutch perch is. I've fitted a GS550 clutch perch on a yamaha virago 535, but I will not fit it on a GS. Maybe if I fit those 4" rise bars off the GS550 maybe. But with the stock GS handlebar, that GS550 clutch cable will hit stuff. If you shove it into where it fits, it will probably wear out and break sooner.

What I'm really looking to do is use a GSXR perch and get adjustable levers for better ergonomics. And have matching levers. I'm not a fan of mismatched things lol. I've noticed that my left forearm gets cramped if I'm in stopped traffic for too long. That's why I was wondering if a 2006 or so GSXR brake lever will fit the stock brake perch. If not, I'll just grab a matching brake perch and master cylinder, too.

Probably too late but can't you just get a longer bolt and put a lock nut on the back. I have a 93 so the perch may not be the same but on mine the threaded portion is all the way through the mount allowing for a long bolt to go all the way through. Perhaps if your adjustable gsxr one doesn't work out.

You know, I'm usually pretty good about rigging up fixes like that. I think I overlooked that because in the back of my mind, I really hate the stock clutch lever lol. I'll definitely keep that in mind, though. I might actually do that anyway just to have another spare part.

Yay! The GSXR perch came in. It's a 2004-2005 perch, and it fits perfectly with my bar setup and the stock cable. The only issue is that I couldn't reuse the rubber boot because the GSXR adjuster is gigantic compared to stock.

Now to find matching adjustable levers.

I think I'm in luck, guys! According to the lever fitment guide at the Pazzo racing site, the 2004-2005 GSXR600 uses sizes F-35/S-248 (brake/clutch). From what I've read here, the TL1000S brake levers will fit (F-14/S-248). That means that my GS needs sizes F-14/S-248, which is the same as the TL1000S, and the '97-'03 GSXR600 (among a few others). So, by cross referencing, that means that I can get a set of adjustable levers for a '97-'03 GSXR600, and they should fit.

Does this sound about right?

The Gs500 brake lever is quite compatible with many other bikes - including many Honda's and Kawasaki's.
Our clutch lever is not very compatible.
To date the only compatible clutch lever has been from LSL.
Many make a compatible brake lever.
There are threads with a very long list of compatibility.
If you are using a different perch than the stock GS500, you will probably be OK as long as the clutch lever fits the perch you're using.

But looking at the compatibility list,  it looks like the F-14 is the brake lever you want.

Here's the old compatibility list from a couple years ago

What do you mean by the rubber boot? So will this gsxr perch work for a stock bar?

JAS6377

#17
This one:

It fits up over the adjustment knobs and covers the lever bolt.

And yes, the GSXR perch will fit stock bars. The bars are 7/8" diameter, and so are quite a few other Suzuki models. The only issue with using these on stock bars is, as stated before, clutch cable clearance. I've heard that the cable won't clear the gauges. I'm fine because I have a completely new bar setup. You can use the cables with the 90* bends from the SV, I think. Don't quote me on that lol. Just something to be aware of before you decide to do the mod.

And adidas, you've gotten a lot of mileage out of that compatibility chart lol. Thanks for the help!

What about the clutch safety switch on this?

JAS6377

#19
Oh... I forgot about that. Mine is completely bypassed. Here are both switches side by side. Left is stock, right is GSXR.

The GSXR switch has a connector that goes with it, whereas ours is just pins. You could probably find the connector from a scrap yard and splice it in, or you could simply wire the two terminals to one another and bypass the switch. I'm not sure if the stock connectors will fit into the GSXR switch assembly properly.

I just tried test fitting the stock connectors into the GSXR switch. They will not fit with the black covers on them, and they're not long enough to fit securely in the switch. However, if you're handy with a dremel, you could cut off some of the material around the housing so the stock connectors will slide in (without the covers).
