How much do you weigh and is your GS fast enough?

210 here (with all my gear on) and the bike feels sluggish in gear 3+.

Mods: full exhaust, iridum plugs, rejetted, 2 washers on the pilot needle, K&N lunchbox, 17t front sprocket (probably a contributor)

It doesn't help that I rented a BMW 1200 boxer twin a while back...boy was that thing a beast.

Then again I could afford to lose 20-30lb..

Xevamir

I'm 5'9" and 154lbs.

My bike has felt sluggish lately, but honestly it could really benefit from a tune-up.

Everything (performance wise) on my bike is stock. I'm going to be tackling some of that stuff during the Spring/Summer.

What jetting are you running?

Maybe 200lb with gear and my rejetted bike pulls hard all the time, not sluggish at all; and that's with it running lean after just installing a new exhaust (working on the new jetting).

I currently weigh 230 in gear. Mine pulls pretty well from 3500 to 11000.

i'm about 270 with gear on what was a stock setup and never felt i had a problem getting it up to tripples. :icon_twisted:

290ish with gear, stock powerplant and gearing, upgraded suspension. ... happy enough with power at all ranges, considering its a twin 500 with carbs and will never be injected or big bike performance. .. bike still has more handling than I have need to use... only times I notice power issue is up long straight hills if I want to be an idiot. . And when riding long straights with mates on big power bikes. ... funny though, those big bikes keep getting in my way on the twisty bits! ;) , except the bloke with track day tyres and a crazy face! ... lol

Doh.. I think 22/65/147.5

Something in that range. Genuine Mikuni jets.

I also have the mix screw out 3 turns.

With a K&N drop-in and Vance & Hines pipe (custom fit on stock headers) I'm currently at 22.5/62.5/147.5 4 turns and she's still running lean but similar power as the stock pipe with 20/60/142.5 2.5 turn jetting.

I weigh 126 ;) haha 5'11. And I honestly cant see where people are claiming slow and sluggish, my bike has no problem accelerating.. then again I weigh almost nothing.

gsJack

I weigh about 230# now and have been as heavy as 255# during my 15 years riding stock GSs and have never complained about their performance.  Many think performance mods are the answer to their problems when actually rider mods might do much more for them.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

My bike came with a foam air filter, dynojet, and a performance exhaust and didn't run great. Jetting for me changed what reads out like a BS miracle cure, but only because it was set up so poorly in the first place. Gained 10 mpg, LOTS of low end, a little on the top end, quicker warmup, smoother power band... massive difference.

But if you expect performance mods to make a relatively slow GS into a fast bike, it isn't gonna work.

As for the original topic, 180ish with gear, plenty fast for me. My bike is geared lower, but hits 75ish I think in gear 2 so it can still get up there pretty quick. Before I did the gearing change it did get rather sluggish in 3rd, but I don't really need 3rd to do a proper merge now.

I'm a skinny dude, weigh about 135 and who knows how much my gear weighs.  My bike seems fast enough for me as a new rider for having been riding just over a year. I will likely want to upgrade someday, but I don't think I could have handled a bigger bike to start off with and I don't think I'll be able to handle much more anyway. The thing weighs a lot for a skinny dude, but I can still handle it ok and have even bump started it a handful of times on flat surface.

I sometimes load about 25 pounds in the trunk (lol yeah it's a huge trunk) and don't notice too much of a difference in speed.  But when I have a passenger (anywhere from 120 to 180 pound passengers), it's very noticeable how much slower it goes. Once up past 4th it seems to do pretty good though.  Having a passenger about my weight I can manage ok, but once I get someone above my weight it makes it difficult to hold us both up at stop lights and make those u-turns. Had a 180 lb passenger going through tight turns in the hills and maneuvered just fine.

Conclusion:  yes it's fast enough! :)  2007 gs500f with about 18,000 miles on it, 6,000+ of those were mine.

rebel_rocket

205ish pounds with gear.

The Bike pulls just Fine! (I can usually keep up with my buddies on their r6's) I still have a grin ear to ear every ride  :icon_mrgreen:

Im 70kg about 150lb I think. My bike is 09 with staintune and re jet.  I was stuck behind car and road trian last week on way to work.  Hit a long straight, dropped 2 cogs,  opened throttle up and no kiddin went from 80-160km in what felt like about 6 secs lol!!! As I pulled in past truck, 1st time I look down at clock, 160! Only had bike 2 weeks but asked myself, do I really need more power than this?????
