Vance and Hines too loud??

Holy fricken Harley, Batman!!  

So I rejetted/filtered/exhausted my bike.  I put on a full vance and hines (used) and it is loud... sounds like a harley at idle and will definately wake the neighbors!!  It's SWEET!  but it's almost too loud.  Is there anything I can do to lower the noise?  Is there an easy way adjust the baffle so it doesn't pop so loud?

Believe me, that anti-social V&H isn't going to sound any quieter to your ears or to your neighbors ears with the passage of time.  Probably, the best way to quite it down is to mount a Supertrapp spark arrester on the end of the pipe.  The more frequent solution is to simply cultivate an aura aloofness.

As for the popping, supposedly the popping is caused by unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust headers so the conventional wisdom usually offered here to richen the mixture screws doesn't appear to make sense.

true true, but i live in a building and have some good neighbours that i don't want to piss off, and some crazy neighbours that keep guns in their cars so if i start the bike in the morning and wait for it warm up, those neighbours will have enough time to get to their guns and shoot at me or my bike  :x

Shortly after fitting a V&H pipe to my GS, the neighbors started complaining.  I try not to ride too early in the mornings and when I do I push the bike a little ways away from my building as to not cause too many problems.

For me its a small price to pay for a serious-bike sound and enhanced performance.

Yea - it's too loud for you... I think to ensure the smooth relationship you have with your neighbors, you should immediately remove the exhaust, and send it to me!!!    

If you wanna sell it - lemme know...

actually i just roll down the street to in front of the house where they really old and pretty much deaf guy lives before i start my bike.

When I got my GS it allready had a vance and hince on it. I too thought ist was a little load for me. Then I opened the muffler to find that there was no packing left. I havn't heard it since I put packing back in, but I am sure it got somewhat quieter.

Anyway you might want to pop i open and see if you have packing...

How old is the exhaust?

I heard the newer ones make less noise.
Anyone know if that is true?

yeah, repack it with stainless steel wool, or, if you can find it, ceramic insulative blanket, good for 3000 degree's. got some saved waiting for when i build my LP Forge, unless i find a ferriers forge cheap enough.

To answer the question about the age of my exhaust, I would have to say that I do not know. Probably old...

Second is a sugestion to go buy some genaric muffler repacking at your local dealer for 10 bucks. Steel wool will rust away in no time.

I had the F1r ("loudloudloud" exhaust), and the main problem was the warm-up.  Once I got the bike in gear and riding, I could lug it for a couple blocks, until I got away from the houses of people who know me .  If you can warm it up in an open space, with the exhaust pointed away from any neighbors, then that should help.
