So my bike wouldn't start so I took my carbs off and cleaned the bowls, jets, and checked the float needle. All seemed good there. New spark plugs and I was back on the road. After about 50 miles I was getting backfiring and stumbling during take off. Now she will only start when cold but die after 10 seconds. After dying fuel will run out the carb overflow. Oh and some likes to drip from the exhaust headers while it's running for the 10 seconds. Im going to take another closer look at the carbs and maybe check my valves because that seems to be a good starting place. Any other ideas? I feel like this could be obvious and I'm just not seeing it. It's s 02 gs500. Thanks for any advice.

You have a float that doesn't close ... First guess.

You put the fuel line into the top T instead of the bottom T ?

You could have another issue ... but these 2 get my first guess.

Cool.

Thanks Buddha! I tried looking online today for a carb rebuild kit but after no luck and talking to the parts guy at my local Suzuki dealership, apparently my 02 is a style they only made for 2 years? Is this true? I couldn't find a carb kit that was for my year. Anyone know if an 01 kit would work?

Basically only two different carbs on gs500s over the years. 89-00 two jet model, and 01+ three jet model. Only extra addition I can think of was throttle position sensor (TPS) for like 04+ maybe?, but that doesn't pertain to what would come in a carb kit... Bowls, gaskets, jets, etc are same 01+. Note that needle valves that come in a carb kit do not work well with the gs500... Many users report issues with them, do don't bother buying the kit with needle valves - you'll want to stick with OEM on that if you need to replace those, but cleaning should be sufficient for them in most cases.

The TPS was for the 03+ but the US market didn't get the GS500 for 03; so in the states it's 04+ that have the TPS; but as you say carbs are the same for 01+ except for the TPS and needle/jet sizes in different markets.

After diving deeper into my carbs I found that the O ring for the left float needle seat was disintegrated. After replacing the bad O ring and cleaning out all the rubber bits left behind from it I'm back on the road! Note to self; don't overlook the obvious. Thanks for the help guys!
