I like the idea of the dragster!  :woohoo:
BUT, i don't trust the welds and the structure.... even at 5 Mph :o
I'm sorry to say, but i have to warn you.

Have you ever looked close at the factory welds on the gs?

It's not only the welds, i think the combination of welds, the angle of the front fork and breakin at hi speed will tear the frame in peaces.

from the original frame back its a standard style drag bike frame,it would take 150plus ponies not the 55(if we are lucky) from the gs engine. It will run on a smooth drag strip so no bump or pot holes and no twisting corner loads. If it was a road bike then yes it would be built different. If it was a full new tube frame then the top (as in the bit of gs frame that's left)tubes would be 1inch and also the bottom bars .So we are happy with it having looked at lots of frames at the track, also its far stronger than a stock gs frame!!!!!!!!

frames painted, forks and wheels back in. Sorted more bits out and back brake working, front wont bleed , think piston sticking in m/cyl so may have to strip it. Waiting for gasket set to work out deck height , local bike bloke thinks its 40 thou so if that correct and we get the head skimmed 40thou that should give 11-1 compression. that will make her bark. Will be doing body work to finish the buck to make the mould for the glass shell .MUST remember to take the camera!!!!!!

Managed to do 1.5 hrs work every night this week, bits painted, polished and fettled. made rev counter mounting ,picked up handle bar mountings from breakers on the way home from work and used them to mount the bracket . Sorting the air shift pipes , tank and valves tonight and I will take the camera .

Great, cant wait to see some new pictures! Also cant wait to see times with an airshift!

Got the head back today, barrels tomorrow. Heads skimmed 43 thou and 10thou of the barrels .Need to radius the edge by the exhaust valve so will lose a bit of compression but hope it will make up for it in better flow. As to the air shift I fitted the new battery and checked the relays ect but the air valve didn't work, not had time to find out whats up yet. Spent all afternoon filling and rubbing down the buck and its nearly done ready to take a mould from.Running out of time to get it ready for the 19th as still have to dry build head to check piston clearance to valves, mod ign timing, make exhausts , finish gear linkage and make body work . Only have 2 sundays a random day of and 2 hours at night .

update got some Honda cb1000 carbs for £20 ,38mm so made some manifolds tonight using the flange from the gs carbs drilled out with a hole saw and then welding some bends on using off cuts of exhaust pipe. Just happened to have 2 bits of the correct diameter and bend in my usefull bits bin (never throw stuff out if you have the space!!!!) Now have to open the intake runners out to 38mm and blend them in. shame we cant get GR650 pistons and sporty cams easy in the UK .
the mould is coming on ,three layers of paper and pva tonight ,same tomorrow should make it strong enough we hope. pics. soon when I have time

This is a pretty ambitious project.
Wont you need to degree your cams to make any real horsepower with all that head shaving?
No matter what i do to it, it's still a GS
It's not how fast your bike is, it's how long you are prepared to hold the throttle on.

dan the man

yes but that's a winter job. Anyway engine built and fitted, Honda carbs modified and exhausts made, starter solenoid wont work so temp fitted a 70amp relay. Put some fuel in and it LIVES and once idle was set runs sweet. Carbs don't seem to far out but it will be set on a rolling road but that's a winter job as well. Gear shift to set tomorrow night, wheel and fork alignment . Have the day off Wednesday so making the throttle cable and then the glass fibre shell that needs to be fitted Thursday night so might be ready for Sunday.

I agree fully  :thumb:

I will be amazed if it makes it through scrutineering with welds like that.

Those welds were scary - looking at the rest of the frame it is possible that they were ground down after those pics  :icon_eek:
I really hope it did not break...

dan the man

Not made it for Sunday as the LH carb wont work, blocked idle passage according to the local bike breaker/repairer as the CV carb wont send fuel to the main jet if the idle is blocked. Cleaned it 3 times so must be corrosion. On the look out for some 38mm Mikuni round sliders (cant afford flats!!!) We know its lack of fuel as its not getting hot on that side but spray a light mist of brake cleaner in in carb and it picks up and gets hot.
As to the welding debate its not as bad as it looks in pics, the wire speed was playing up and its now fixed . The weld have been ground out and redone when I get time to post pics you will see my neat welding. Next track day is the 2nd August so more late nights then----------------

Sooooo took the R1 instead so he could do his licenced runs, had to make a chain guard from a ali food pot from one of the other racers and then the battery died so borrowed some ones spare . Any way he did a 12 .6 @ 118 as a first easy pass , 2nd run tried a bit harder of the start but she wheeled so shut throttle and then opened up again ,wheeled and smashed him in the nuts. still ran a 11.6 !!!! . 3rd pass a near perfect launch just showing air in first gear and did his best of 11.2 @135 .wants to run a 10 next.
Back to the GS , tried to get that carb to go last night but no joy. Its not getting a vacumn signal to pull fuel and raise the dashpot so think its defo got a blocked internal drilling. Will try again.

SORTED!!!!!! cleaned carb again , think some of the transfer holes were blocked as in the ones that are by the butterfly and are minute. Hurt my ears at 8k revs and sounds strong. Need to fit the bodywork next but cant find the dzus fastner recepticals  (plates with the spring bit already fitted) ,wasted 2hrs looking. have some slide on ones but no pins unless I rob some of the R1.
