I am thinking ,  there was no drilled and taped holes for the steel hoses  that bolt to the engine ,  there is two places  on the engine  (side by side )
this is a big clue  as  to never having  the  2nd  valve  assy. installed  on the bike .

The ports have been roughly cast but they haven't been finished machined along with the tapped holes that should hold the PAIR pipes and their flanges in place on the cylinder.

Your bike has never had the PAIR system fitted but does have the evaporative control system fitted and the black cylinder in the pic is the charcoal filter that absorbs fuel fumes.
Cheers  Sledge  !!!!!!!!!!!!  +1  again   ,  excellent   wording  and  excellent  knowledge  ,  kind regards  from us  on the other side of  the  pond  ..........

Concerning the hose with the round plastic piece attached to it:

Looks like part of a calif model, the EGR.
Just cut out a square out of the yellow of a yellow/green sponge, and insert it there.
It's some sort of vacuum line, that over time has sucked up the filter in the engine (sensitive to fuel, mine also worn the filter).
I used a synthetic sponge as filter, works fine, sponges are easy to get, and work fine as air filters.

Leaving it open allows debris to enter the engine.. not good.

You can't block it, or the engine will stall.
