Hey everyone!

I just recently bought a 2009 GS500f. I replaced the battery as the previous owner left the old one sit all winter. Took it to the shop and had the oil changed and the carbs cleaned.

Been commuting about 2 - 3 days a week for about a month. The only issue I have experienced during that time, was if it sat for longer than 3 days, the battery would be dead. So I started taking it out for short rides periodically if I wasn't planning on using it, or hooking it up to a charger.

After the end of work (about 25 mile one way trip there with no issues), I started my commute home. It got about 2 miles before it stalled. It stalled as I pulled in the clutch and down shifted to 5th gear. When I let the clutch out it dipped down like I was going from 6th to 1st gear. I pulled the clutch in and noticed the oil light was on and the tach was at 0. Thats when I realized it stalled. I pulled over to the shoulder and came to a stop. I tried to start it again and no luck. It chugged a few times and then I got a battery click.

At this time I waited for my friend to jump start me with his bike. With a jump start it would start running again. I got another 1/2 mile and it died. Several times, and all the same experience. However, instead of a drastic stall, it was more of a slow chugging then drastic stall.

I then parked it for the night, charged the battery over night. When I got to it the next morning hoping a fully charged battery would potentially get me home, it was still only able to go about 1/2 mile with out stalling.

Now Im almost certain it is not the battery that is causing the issue, but it could be the regulator, stator, etc. But I'm not sure. I'm hoping someone can pull me out of this jam.

Fuel starvation? Vacuum in tank (breather not working) try to open and close tank and see if you can continue.
Tried running on prime?
You think Pyrrhic victory is bad you should try Pyrrhic defeat!

Haven't tried running it yet. Will be trying that after I post to see if it will stay running on Prime.

I took the tank off to check for any electrical shorts. And when the moment I took the tank off, I noticed the crack in the carb (head or cap not sure the vernacular).  Not sure if that would cause my issues?

UPDATE:

Test ride with petcock to reserve and Prime, it did not stall.

Separate test ride petcock to "On" and it died after a 1/2 mile. put the valve back to reserve and it ran fine.

Any thoughts?

About a half tank of fuel. I can try to fill it more to see if that solves it, but Im not thinking that is an issue.

MeeLee

clogged petcock, or fuel line.
Get a cup, Unplug the main fuel line towards the carburetor, and see if the petcock spits out fuel.

Hang on. .. half a tank of fuel. .. visually? ... when you look down the filler cap and see a little of the centre hump showing above fuel level. .. and think 'yeah that about half' ... its near to reserve! ... and about half a mile is what I think a bowl of fuel will do?

These tanks have a 5 litre reserve level! ... and many many MANY new owners have had 'plenty fuel' but stalled bikes until switched to reserve!

I have the same problem on my 2006 model.  It will run on PRIME only and the RPM goes up all by itself.  ON and RESERVE will only allow about 1/2 mile then fuel stops.    I am thinking the fuel chicken valve is possibly bad and needs replacing.
Anybody have suggestions as to possible solution?
