Instrument Cluster

Hey guys,

So my bike's instrument cluster is pretty mangled due to it being a school bike earlier in life. I just put some superbike handlebars and bar end mirrors on and it's looking real slick which got me to thinking about fixing up my gauge cluster.

I'm thinking about cleaning it up and going with a single large speedo/tach combo gauge like this:

I am trying to get an idea of how much work I'm going to have to do to sort out the rest of the dash, eg. the neutral indicator, high beam indicator etc. Are all the lights incorporated into the speedo/tach assembly? Anyone have a link to a technical drawing of the assembly so I can avoid taking my front end apart until I've made a decision for sure?

Oooo I like the simple look of that speedo/tach. I have superbike bars as well and I really like them  :D

I'm thinking you'd want one where the tach can go higher than 7k though?

Also, your GS is a '96 right ?  ...I found the parts drawing for a '96 on motosport.com and was about to include the link in this thread but at the bottom it specifically says USA model and I don't want to give you crummy info  :icon_eek:  :nono:

As far as the RPM/mph gauge gose pretty simple and basic to swap I don't have my bike by me today so the light cluster part I can't be sure about. But diffently look for one with higher rpm then 7k

To be clear, I am not looking at buying that specific tach, just an example of the aesthetic I am looking for.

So it looks like I'll be modelling my own custom gauge bracket if I want to go this route. Might just do it anyways though.

The GS uses speedometer with a mechanical drive pickup at the front wheel. You can use an electronic speedo but a pickup sensor will need to be made. The front wheel and the front sprocket (most newer bikes) will have different signal timing. I stayed with electronic pickups at the front wheel the f/e conversions I have done and used 1st gen SV gages.

The electronic tach is easy to wire in. Pull the signal from one of the coil wires. It has been years since I have done but I believe I used a black/yellow wire. Not certain though.
