Changed friction plates but still getting a bit of slipping

Basically as topic says. I changed the friction plates, which were in terrible condition (thanks to the shitty dealer), but i'm getting a bit of slipping.

The speed stays around a certain speed while the revs continue to increase and it makes a weird sound till it catches. Or, like I did tonight, Held in the clutch and rolled to a stop and the bike just shut off.

After changing the plates I messed around with the clutch adjustment at the lever and at the case. I know there is an adjustment under the case cover but i've never messed with that even after changing friction plates. I'm starting to think I messed up around the part going into the case. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

I'd start by doing a full clutch cable adjustment from both ends of the cable and see if you still have the issue once it's been properly readjusted.

To prevent anymore mistakes is there a guide you follow?

Must have pushrod freeplay or you will have clutch slippage, do a 3 point clutch adjustment per Service Manual:

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Another possibility is the cable itself is splintering and sticking in the cable outer. Make sure the cable slides back and forward without friction .

I finally have free time tomorrow to do all this. But I just took it out for a ride tonight and it happened again and felt alot worse than it did the first time it did it after the friction plate change where I had to pull over on the highway cause the bike died. I just want to make sure i'm looking in the right place for this and make sure it's a slipping clutch issue.

The exhaust started making a really low rumbling sound (stock exhaust) and it started losing power I had to keep revving it as I came to a stop to keep it going. It eventually died a second time and when I tried starting it, it had issues starting. So I turned the key waited a couple minutes and then tried again and it started, still making that weird sound. I eventually turned the choke on in an attempt to help keep the revs up and it worked for a bit then the bike jolted and everything went back to normal, no more weird sound. I'm not attributing the choke fixing the issue cause i'm not sure if it really helped or not, but does this sound like a clutch problem?

Edit: BTW, Thank you gsJack for the image. I'm gonna do this tomorrow morning.

Edit 2: The locknut in #5 seems to be stuck around a certain area of the adjuster. It will spin but barely moves.

So I did a 3 point clutch adjustment and tried to take a ride. I got to the top of the street and pulled over because I forgot to lace up my helmet and put the bike in neutral. When taking it back down to first gear it happened again, my bike starts making that weird noise and the rpms rise while the speed sticks. The bike eventually dies. So I put the choke on and turn the primer on and it seems to run fine, for the exception of running primer and choke. Could all this be a carb problem?

Be careful with number 5 and 6 the lock nut adjuster. Mine, the threads stripped and I had to order a new set. They were so bad on shipping I was out18 days waiting for the part to come in.

An update, going from on to primer while the bike is acting up seems to bring it out of that odd state.

Do you know what that part is called? I'm gonna have to replace it eventually.

Thanks man.

Update: I found the issue! I don't know how I didn't notice it earlier but there is a vacuum leak on the carbs. I took it for another spin but on primer and though it ran really rough, it ran without the issue popping up. I sprayed the boots with carb cleaner and the rpms went crazy.

Anyone know how much the boots are or where I can find them? I looked on bike bandit but didn't see them listed.

By boots, are you referring to the gaskets on the air box side or the valve intake side?

If you mean the diaphragms attached to the carb slides, as far as I know they come as a whole slide/diaphragm unit and are hideously expensive. It is often cheaper to get some second carbs ( in good nick) than to buy them.

Yeah, it seems to be the gaskets on the Valve intake side. I could be wrong, it could be at the Vacuum port because when I sprayed carb cleaner it seemed to be in that area.

Did you fix your slipping clutch or are you side-tracked by engine running issues?

Clutch: how are your clutch steels and springs? Did slipping overheat them?
