I'll preface this question with the fact that I am a mechanic by profession, I work for a John Deere dealership.  I, over the years here, have rebuilt large Agricultural tractor transmissions, engines, industrial equipment and everything In between down to weed wackers and chainsaws. I say this so I don't get my head bit off for asking this possibly idiotic question. Can a GS 500 crankshaft be replaced without disassembling the top end of the motor? It looks like you could flip the engine on its head, remove the lower case half, leaving the gears, balancer and such in the upper case, undo the rod caps, pull the crank and go from there.  Any ideas

I would be thinking cam chain :icon_question:...............and with the tensioner removed will there be enough slack in it to clear the crank if its left wrapped around the cams :icon_question:
