So I can't see up in the hole where the bolt head is holding the ignition switch on, and I am not keen on removing the entire fork crown just to get a look at it.

Some say the '92 GS500E has "breakaway" bolts like this:

Some say it has the "reverse Torx" or "star head" like this:

What say ye? Which is it? I want to swap the ignition switch this weekend and I'm about to make a run to HF, they have a set of "star" sockets that would likely have the one to remove the "reverse Torx" bolt if that's what's in there, but I'm not going to bother buying another set of single-purpose tools if I don't need them. If it's the "breakaway" bolts then I am just going to live with the ignition switch that's on there.

Parts fiches says the bolts are #09139-06026. Type it into google images and you will see they are in effect a combination of the two photos.

They have an external torx head (e-torx) prior to fitting but when tightened up to a predetermined torque with a socket the torx element will shear off leaving just the skirt making the bolt tamperproof.

You can get them out but it involves dismantling the stem and some careful drilling, or you can try hammering a small socket onto the remnant and hope it has enough bite to free the bolt off  :thumb

Thanks guys! This looks like a project I'll put off until winter time.

My standard practice on triples I am killing cos they are being swapped for katana, you can hack the triple just above the lock.
The advantage of that method is that you can take it off in a fraction of a second in a muffler shop style cut off saw.
The disadvantage is, sadly it kills the triple.
Cool.
