SV650 Shock swap

Hi all,

Just swapped out the GS500 old shock which was knackered for one out of an SV650. I've cut it down and drilled it so it's only about 1/2 inch longer than the old shock.

The chain is making a lot of noise now, I've tried it at different tensions but it's still making a racket when it's unloaded (I.e. clutch in or slowing down, no noise when under power)

Any ideas? I read a thing from Buddha in 08 about flipping the linkage upside down - does that work?

Cheers!

Endopotential

I did the same on my bike.  It raised the tail a bit, and consequently pushed the swingarm in such a way that the front of the chain rubs on the front of the swingarm.  Not horrible in my case, I can't hear anything and it doesn't seem to be digging into the rubber guide pad.

Could this be what you're experiencing? Chain tension is also correct given the change in geometry?

By increasing the suspension travel you need to have a looser chain to accommodate the wider range of motion of the swingarm. I imagine this could cause the chain to rub more often on the swing arm chain guard.
Make sure your chain isn't too lose and that you do actually have the rubber track on top of your swingarm up by the pivot. you could swap the front and rear sprocket to something larger with the same final drive ratio. Something like 17t front and 42t rear might get the chain off the swingarm.
