Engine noise + I messed up :(

Hi Guys,

So I bought this 04 GS500F, without a lot of knowledge. It happens that it started doing that freaking clanking noise in the Engine. I've seen some videos with the same noise and it appears it is the Con rod bearing issue.
I decided then to check the valve clearance first, and found the right exhaust valve really tight, not even able to move the bucket and really hard to even lift the shim.

So with all my knowledge (meaning no knowledge at all) I decided to loose the cam journal a little bit so I could lift the shim a little bit more  :dunno_black:

Turns out it was a bad idea, I ended up snapping one of the screws.

So I called a local shop and asked if they would take a look at that to fix it first, before trying to figure out the noise stuff.

Basically they told me it would cost too much to figure where that noise is coming from and if it's fixable.
I don't have a garage available to remove the engine and open it.

I'm thinking about replacing the engine, please share your thoughts with me.

Do you think that this is really the best idea? If so, I will be paying for them to replace it, but no one will give me a nice estimate for the cost of this job.

Thanks for all your help and advice!

Do a search on STARTER CLUTCH posts, that'll be the noise probably.
Replacement engine? -How will you know that the one you buy is any better?
Beam me up Scottie....

I have broken one of those bolts cam journal bolts myself. They are very soft and easy too break, don't feel too bad.

Buy a nice bolt extractor set and have a go. I was able to get mine out.
Then, if you don't have it, get the motion pro valve tool so you don't have to lift the cams. If you do lift them, you need to remove the cam chain tensioner first and make sure you know how to reset everything so that it is in time. If you are off even one tooth on the cam chain you can bend a valve.

Also +1 on checking the state of the starter clutch/generator rotor (once you figure your valves out of course).

BTW there's another method posted in the for sale area about how to change the shims without the tool. You turn the cam so the valve in question is open, use a zip tie through the spark plug hole to hold the valve open, then turn the engine around until the lobe faces up and pull the shim. Put the new shim in, rotate the engine until the valve is open and remove the zip tie. Repeat with each valve as necessary.

Good luck extracting that bolt. What a pain! I hate when that happens.

Alright,
I used the zip tie method to keep the valve open. But even with the zip tie, not enough clearance to remove the shim.

Think I'll get the extractor and give it a try...it's already broken so if I fix, it I win 8).
After I silve the screw stuff, I'll change the oil...nice tome to check the starter clutch.

Thanks for your support guys!
As soon as I hace any news I'll let you know!
