dear GS-experts,

on a ride from Germany to France i suddenly noticed that the enginge stopped.  in  the mid of the ride - on a french route nationale - at the speed of 50 miles.

afterward i had no change to start the engine again with the e-starter.

now my issues: on my way to paris on last sunday - with the Suzuki GS 500 i had issues
- the engine stopped suddenly and after that  the starter did not work again.

The battery works propperly - but only for the lights and the horn. Starting is not possible

I have recogniced that every time when i stop the engine -  a ugly sound is  hearable - it sounds not so good.

btw:  here the thread on the german forum for GS 500 :  http://forum.gs-500.de/showthread.php?p=603119#post603119

here the clip of the engine - you can hear the sound:

I cant play the sound or video. But starter can be taken out and tested. If it spins well, iys worth moving on to the next.
A bad starter clutch will either let the starter spin without engaging the engine or make a loud clunk when you press the starter and start, or not start. There is the very very rare case of where the starter clutch was locked, allowing the engine to start with the starter and then running the starter with the engine with its near 300 to 1 rpm ratio. Yea, starter fell apart in short order.
If you're getting a bad engine noise after the engine starts, you're looking at bad bearings either in the counterbalance or in the crank. But you're not starting - so I'm thinking its the starter. Try thatas your first option, in fact take off the left cover and take the idler gears out and now hit the start button, if starter spins, you're likely looking at a bad starter clutch.

Good luck with all of the above.

Cool.

What happens when you start, does the engine spin? Starter turns?

Is the rotor tight on the crankshaft? Sounds like it carries on spinning when the bike stops. Would also explain crank not turning when starter does.

Bluesmudge

You say the motor does not start but in one video the bike is running.

You need to take that cover off and investigate. You will have to drain the oil.
I think either the start clutch bolts are loose or the generator is loose. Something is spinning when it isn't supposed to.
