Hi guys
I have a 1999 GS500e that bought a couple of months ago. All been great, loving the GS life.... but....
Mud guard melted a bit, front exhaust pipes glowed red hot the other day. Before that,  riding 30 miles and cut out to half power nearing end.  Pottered home reaching 30MPH  top. Seemingly back to full power now and doesn't seem to be over heating...

Noticed a high hanging idle.  Once warm the revs will creep up to 2 and a half/3k. I thought maybe it was running lean and sprayed some wd40 onto the carbon boots to see if I cold find an intake leak but it didn't seem to affect revs.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Definitely sounds like you are/were running lean to me. Overheating (glowing pipes) and hanging idle are both signs of a lean mixture. Might be the carb mixture screws not being set correctly if you cant find a vacuum leak :dunno: someone more knowledgeable than I will need to weigh in on other possibilities.

Relating to a similar recent topic, the hot headers could be the result of an exhaust leak.

Check the header bolts and inspect the headers themselves for holes or cracks.

The excess heat from this could also affect the running motorcycle.
