Took apart the carbs again. Getting pretty good at that :D.

I was looking into the o-ring under the float needle...and there wasnt one?!

Am I missing something?

Also - my neighbor dropped by to try to help me out. said he's hearing a lot of valve noise when I crank here up and recommended checking the clearance/adjusting them.

After all the efforts this weekend she's back to idling regularly (though it's stuttering a little here and there).  ~4k rpm with the choke open. and she'll start to take off but dies when I hit ~3k rpm. My neighbor 2 doors down probably wonders why I keep stopping in from of their house.

She was runnin rich so I stuck the stock pilots back in. Turns out she runs exactly the same with the those as she does with the 20 pilots but the plugs come out cleaner.

You put the mains in the right location right ?
The one in the lower tower in that pic, closer to the float spigot. Not the one toward the front.
Cool.

There's an oring on the brass part that the float needle pushes into.... is that the one you're talking about?

As far as the valve noise goes..... that's normal for a healthy GS engine. Should you check the clearances anyway? Absolutely! Valve clearances are the first thing you should check when getting a bike (usually because they aren't done).

Yup, mains went into the tower

All i saw was brass once I pulled the float & the needle out. It should be black rubber right? The only rubber I saw was the tip of the needle. Or is it under the brass part?

I "think" the float needle has a rubber coating on the tip (the cone part). I was talking about the brass bucket that the float needle pushes upwards in to. If you pull that brass bucket thing out, there is an oring on it.

Found it, Thanks for the info! I was freaking out for nothing.

Update: Both cylinders are consistently firing now, but I'm still dying when I take off. Got new gas, tank about half full. Replaced a splitting fuel line.

I'm noticing something weird though:

When I pull the carbs off my bike and turn them over to swap jets or adjust the floats, I can hear parts jiggling around on the diaphragm side. I sounds like the cap on the needles are jostling around. When I open up that side the cap/o-ring parts are usually detached and caught in the spring. Should those be snapping into place or set in some way? When I first disassembled the carbs i had to pop the needles out. They seemed way more secure then so I'm wondering if they aren't sealing?. Also when I took the carbs off once, the needle sat slightly off the little hole in the mixing chamber.

I also came up on a thread where Buddha broke down the parts responsible for throttle:
"Jets - Pilot controls 0-1/8th, float level controls 1/8th to 1/4, 1/4 to 3/4 is needle, with mains working gradually from about 1/2."

1/4 throttle is about where the bike dies on me - So I'm thinking, are my needles not assembled/working properly?

Sorry for the novel folks - I'm approaching frustrated & philosophical status at this point. :technical:
