I've been looking to get a full set of tools all in one place for a while and Harbor Freight has the 301 piece set on sale with coupon for $160. Is this a hot deal or should I keep looking???

I didn't see the size (?) range, but on sale $159.99 ,... . . .looks ok to me.

How much do you work on your bike and similar things?

For something as frequently used as a socket set I prefer to have something a little nicer than Harbor Freight. I buy their stuff for tool I use infrequently.
Also, you have to be careful with those big mechanics sets because you often end up with a bunch of tools you never use. Even if its more expensive per tool, it can be smart to buy what you actually need. For example, maybe you only need a metric set if you don't own an old American car.

That said, HF does offer lifetime warranties on their hand tools and they are very good about honoring that, even without a receipt.

Lowes has a tool set go on sale, maybe not 300 piece set. but actually decent enough quality their house brand is. plus you can return broken stuff anytime. [this warranty is great for bolt cutters, I can put some nasty teeth in those..]

also HF open end wrenches are horrible. I've almost collected every metric size of husky wrenches from big 32mm wrench to the small 8mm one. just buying one one or two as I need it.

for the GS500, 8/10/12/14 and I believe 19mm is all you need [unsure about 19mm I use an imperial open end wrench to remove the axle nuts I believe its 3/4]

Horrible fright crap is pretty much made of cheese. Its OK if you're doing small light sheite but the heavily used ones for our bikes, be prepared to have them break.
In fact I have broken so many 8mm and 10mm sockets as well as round off several allen wrenches I had to get snap on for those. The 10mm snap on has in fact got enough wear on it to have me suspect I need some professional grade snap on or some like that.
Cool.

IMHO, buy the best tools you can afford. Quality tools will last your lifetime and you can pass them on. Inexpensive tools are OK for occasional work, but don't expect them to last.

Buy what you need when you need it.  :)

Well... I bit the bullet and bought this set. Took it home and liked the look of the sockets. The screwdrivers had all popped out of their holders and while putting them back noticed that one of the larger screwdriver shafts was literally sticking out of the handle at about a 3* angle. It's a shame because I really liked the set and I told the counter person that as I returned it this afternoon. If I am going to spend that much I am looking for a better quality and all metric set.
Harbor Freight has been good for individual tools. For example, their electric impact wrench made easy work of taking apart my 2007 front forks. And their deep well impact socket set is great. I've broken their "free" screwdrivers before so I'll wait till a better deal comes around.

Thanks everyone for your input. Chance taken and lesson learned.
