Question about different models and HPs

Hi,
Does anyone know what makes GS500e models up to '97 to have 52 hp, and from '98 on, to declare 47 hp? as seen on this page:

Oh yea, all the GS500's made to 97 put together had 52 hp. Then after 98 they only totaled for 47, because I think they made 10% less GS500's after 98.

IIRC, that was when the industry standard for measuring horsepower was changed. Pre 97 was measured at the crank, post 98 was measured at the rear wheel.

Just what I've read on the internet, so it must be true?

there is a previous thread about this on this group.  Also many dyno run sheets available on the "net".....

Both models make the same...about 39HP at the rear wheel...if tested the same way.

LOL!!!

A "highly calibrated" butt...I bet you could ride various bikes, estimate the HP, and come within a HP or so, of a dyno run.   Cheaper, faster, just as accurate.

In addition to changing from measuring at the crank to at the rear wheel, there were some mechanical changes.

As I understand it, there are 3 different versions of the GS500 carburetors. I think the '89 - '99 2 stage carbs gave a little extra horsepower. The '04+ 3 stage carbs are supposed to give the best throttle response all around and better fuel economy.

pretty sure mine puts out like 25HP. I've ridden 15HP gokarts with more torque. lol  if the GS was a twin 2 stroke, it'd be the perfect engine. lol
